With just one lo in the house who drinks whole milk, we usually throw some out. It's more expensive to buy a half gallon, though. We're kind of stuck in the middle right now.

We buy the more expensive half gallons, because I can't finish a gallon in time before it begins to "smell" off to me. I think I need a nose adjustment, though!

Yes! Well my husband is the only one who drinks cows milk in our house (I drink Almond milk due to an intolerance) but I buy him 2 galls of milk per week.....he loves his milk! LOL

Hardly ever, since it's currently just DH and I and we hardly drink milk. I know what you mean, we would buy the smaller size, but it's only a little bit more to buy the 1 litre so we always do. Sometimes we actually do go through it all.
We always try to grab the stuff way at the back for the farthest possible expiry date lol.

Before I was pregnant, it went to waste but now I go through at least a gallon or so a week! Love me some milk!
nectarine / 2631 posts
We never drink a whole gallon! But since 1/2 gallons are more we just toss some.

Yep, we go through 1.5 gallons a week, usually. I use half a gallon for my cereal and coffee, and DH drinks tons of milk, so he easily goes through a gallon. He uses it for protein shakes after working out, or just drinks a tall glass at night.

sometimes. we binge, we run out or it spoils, rarely do we have just enough. ultra pasteurized lasts longer though, so we're usually better off buying that even though some people think it's not as good for you- i don't know where you can buy organic milk that's not ultra pasteurized though!

sometimes! we're also binge milk drinkers. we don't always get it at the grocery store, unless i'm going to bake, or if we have some big craving for cereal!
we're switiching ds to WCM soon tho, so i'm sure it will be a staple soon enough!

That was one of the reasons we switched to organic (even before we had LO) . . . to avoid it spoiling! It worked out for us to spend a little more up front than to throw more $ down the drain (more often).

@MsLipGloss: organic cow's milk lasts longer than regular??? If it will last longer, we may consider it, depending on the cost difference.

We go through exactly one gallon every week for a 5 yr old and 2 yr old. If I cook with milk that week though, I have to buy more.

I go through a gallon of milk about every two weeks with one LO. LO drinks about 12 oz. of milk a day during the week. He drinks more on the weekend. Some weeks we go through the gallon quicker than others. I buy a half gallon of skim for myself.

Always. We buy organic and it lasts much much longer than regular. I can drink a whole gallon in 3 days. I love milk.
pomegranate / 3414 posts
Yep - with DD, DS and DH drinking whole milk we go through about 2 gal per week. I however can't seem to finish 1/2 gal of skim milk before it goes bad.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@MsLipGloss: is that because it's organic, or because it's ultra pasturized? I buy Horizon because it has vegetarian DHA, but I am open to another brand...please don't tell me you use a local brand!!!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@looch: I don't use a local brand. We usually buy Horizon or Organic Valley.

When I was pregnant and DS started drinking milk, we had no problems finishing off a gallon, and sometimes needed more than 1 a week. Since I've given birth we've come close to having to throw some out, but I'll usually finish it off first.

Always. We buy skim lactaid for ourselves and that lasts a long time somehow. And Wagon Sr. is a big cereal eater. As for whole milk, we can easily go through 2 gallons a week. Used to be more, but now with LMW in daycare most of the week (and we send water, not milk) the intake has gone way down for my milk monsters.

@mediagirl: We go through about 4 gallons a month. DH and LO LOOOOOOVE milk.
pomegranate / 3890 posts
Omg we go through so much milk. Prov about about 2 to 3 gallons a week
pomegranate / 3729 posts
@IRunForFun: I think we are married to the same guy. DH easily goes through a gallon a week with protein shakes and his tall glass of milk at night.
I don't ever drink it (ok, unless it's accompanied by fresh from the oven brownies) and LO doesn't really care for it. So, we use it in cooking and for DH.

@MsLipGloss: @mediagirl: The ultra pasteurized has a further out expiration date, but if you read the carton it says the milk will still last the same amount of time as regular milk once opened. So you can't buy a gallon of it and expect it to necessarily last until the date on it.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
nope bc I'm the only one that drinks milk. And buying the half gallon is always more expensive. So weird!
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
Hmm we buy the ultra pasteurized organic stuff so it has never gone bad on us!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
My problem is I don't drink whole milk so I can't taste it before M drinks it. I don't know the smell of it either. So, I just go by the date and if we hit the date, toss. I drink skim.
pomelo / 5509 posts
@bpcmarj: Hahaha. And I don't drink it either! I use it on cereal and in coffee, but I'd never just drink a glass of milk.
