I think we might hang them on the house this year. I want white but DH wants colored lights.

Yes. In my neighborhood growing up, every house had lights all along their rooftop.
We now live in Wisconsin and we put white lights along the entire edge of our roof, but we are one of the few houses that do. Most people just put outside lights around their porch.
I like white lights outside (with evergreen swags and red bows), colored lights inside!

@Ra: haha, this will be our first time so I hope it goes well!

@Ra: LOL! It's only hard the first year. We put in little planter hooks to hang them on behind the fascia board and then just left the hooks. Now it takes all of 20 minutes to hang them up, and most that time is spent untangling the lights.

@autumnlove: I put mine up this weekend! I love coloured lights outside to brighten the dark and snow and white lights inside as they are more neutral. They make streets seem so much more festive and inviting!

Yes! Just along the roof line. Simple but effective. Always just white. Not a fan of colored lights.

Yep a few trees and bushes. White lights and a couple colored!

We usually do, put we keep it pretty sparse. We just do it along the front of the porch and the front windows. We don't get all the way up on the roof or anything.

No. I'd love to, but we're LAZY. I try to put them in the front windows though.

Yup! DH does it. I forget what color he prefers... I think he prefers color and I prefer white. He hangs it so it ends up being colored lights.

Yes! I love old school multi color C9 bulbs! Finally bit the bullet and bought them last year.

My house is the Griswolds in Christmas Vacation. We have lights all over the place and this year, three huge inflatables.
I love it though, I never thought I would.

Every year! I'm hoping to put more up this year now that E's older and less of a handful
@looch: I love gaudy christmas houses. It's awesome. The more lights and stuff, the better, in my book! Festivity to the MAX!

Yes - white lights lining our section of the sidewalk and the driveway. They then run up around the garage and wrap around our porch support post.

@blackbird: haha, our lights are these, so we can "go big":
My husband is planning to also pipe music out there and I am sure he'll incorporate the fog machine.

Yes! I love Christmas lights! DH has a think for red and green old school giganto bulbs on the house, and i like colored lights in the trees. We're putting them up this weekend because we're leaving for Thanksgiving Wednesday. They'll be up and ready for when we get back!

We usually put one string of white lights outside (we're so adventurous! lol), but this year since we're moving in January we won't be putting any out.

Yes! I love Christmas lights and light up yard decor for the holidays.

Nope. Our house could be a bit treachorous we do Swedish style lights on the main 3 windows.

Yes - we like white lights inside and outside. Evergreen swags and red bows and a few big wreaths. I love putting candles in the windows too. It makes the house look so cozy! No inflatables but I'm sure as lo gets older we'll give in to something!

The first year we lived in our house we covered every shrub in the front yard with lights. It was so fun! Then we got the electric bill... LOL. Now we just do candles in all the windows and a wreath on the door, very classic New England, most of our neighbors do the same.

Yes. This year I'll string it through the front porch, but I'm going to be working out a way to hang them along our roof for later years.
I have colored lights.

@autumnlove: ha, my dh always wants color lights and I always want white lights!
We hung lights and garland around the columns on our front step last year. I think we will do that this year and maybe add some lights to the bushes too!
nectarine / 2636 posts
We hang them on the 1st and 2nd floor roof line! My DH is super proud of being all dangerous with the ladder on the 1st story roof to get to the 2nd story. We get the big C9 bulbs in white! Love it. So clean and tidy and pretty.

We always hang lights outside. We both like coloured lights, inside and out!
pomegranate / 3113 posts
I'd like to but we don't have any exterior outlets so there's nowhere to plug them in
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
All the credit goes to my husband for the lights. i never even knew something like that existed, lol.

We just bought a house, so I'm very eager to do Christmas lights but DH is very anti-putting them up himself. So I think for this first year we'll probably settle on just doing the porch and I'll try to convince him to do more next year.
FWIW I'm OCD - the other kind, Obsessive Christmas Disorder - so I'd go all out Griswald if I had the option.

We put lightbulb candles in the windows. I think it's a New England thing?
