We have a small cozy one... it's great for the kids, although there's very little shade in the summer and it often swarms with mosquitoes.
Actually on second thought, I'm not sure it's worth playing for a place with a backyard! Maybe if there were less mosquitoes, then we could use it every day...

Yes, over half an acre! We haven't used it yet, and it needs some TLC since we just moved in, but I'm so excited to take LO out in it to play.

Yes, actually big for living in the city. Needs a lot of work though since we just moved in and renters were living here before we bought it. DH did some flower planting today and we got a patio set and grill this week. Going to wait till next summer to re-sod since we have to level the backyard out so R can run around.
We have a hot tub too. Can't wait for DH to clean it out so we can relax at night once R goes to bed with a glass of wine!

@mrbee: I totally never thought you had a back yard. I think I've probably always stereotyped you guys as New Yorkers that must live in a high rise. Obviously from the south I don't know much about NY.

We have a backyard. The grassy areas are split because our lot is weird and our pool and patio takes up alot of space. The previous homeowners had a nice size jungle gym on one side of the yard. Currently, we just hang out on the patio. Not to long ago we saw a raccoon drinking out of our pool; neither have swam in it again. The yard will come in handy when we get a dog layer this year.

We have a huge front yard and a small backyard (not sure of the size, but it's a sort of typical "city sized lot" backyard. Our backyard backs directly onto a private 6 acre nature conservatory owned by our HOA, so it's pretty much the best of both worlds.

Not at all.
And personally I wouldn't want one, I hate yard work with a firey passion.
We have a bike path that runs right behind our house and a park with a running track and sprinklers right across the street.

Yes, and I looove to sit outside. We are currently renting and we have a small personal space and a large community lawn in the back, but we are in the process of purchasing a townhome that has a large front porch, back patio, and lawn Can't wait!

Yes. I go out in it like twice a month. My husband goes out a few times a week though. I like that it adds an extra sound and privacy buffer between us and the neighbors.

We have a pretty large backyard but the bugs are pretty crazy since we're right next to the woods. The yard has been fenced in since we bought it, and last summer we built a 400 square foot deck. However, the few trees we have are all very tall and in one part of the yard, so there's not much shade.

Yes, in our current house we have a half acre. It's only half landscaped though. Our new house has a much smaller backyard but it's landscaped, is big enough to have a big toy and some run around room + I'm so excited about our big patio for entertaining.

Our backyard is a typical small suburb backyard and with the two dogs using it 2x day I jokingly refer to it as the toxic waste dump. This summer will be LO's first year wanting to play in the grass, but I think we'll stay in the front yard to avoid the K9 landmines

My parents have five acres though, I loved growing up with a big yard and plan to take LO there fairly often throughout the summer.

We have a modestly sized backyard for the suburbs, but we are using it a lot these days. Mainly the patio area where the kids play. When it gets hot (soon), we will stay in more. But I'm thinking of treating my backyard for mosquitoes this summer and see how well it works since all the kids want is to be outside!

Yep, I love our yard. I wish it was more private, but one or two strategically placed trees will fixed that. We got it fenced last fall, so it feels more private even though I can still see the house behind us. The lawn is pretty green (thanks to the previous owners - we have to try to keep it that way) and nice and flat. It gets mainly sun, but a little shade. The dining room walks out to a nice Trex deck with an awning, and it's about 3 steps down to the grass. We just moved to this house in October, so I'm looking forward to actually enjoying the yard now that it's nice out.
ETA: I haven't used it much with J yet, but I play fetch with my dog every night out in the yard. She gets a lot of use out of it. Hopefully we will too!

Our backyard is mostly pool, so it's good for the summer and fine when it's frozen, but spring and autumn it's kind of a waste of space. Oh well, it's a good problem to have, I guess!

Yep-- it's pretty small because of the hot tub and brick patio, one of the main reasons why DH wants to build our forever home soon.

Yes, and it's actually pretty nice! It's a decent size, is pretty private/quiet and we have a little (decrepit, but still standing) covered porch.

yep! our lot is 50 ft by 135 ft with our house in the middle, so the backyard is decent size. we use it a lot in the summer for bbqing and having fires!

We have a pretty decent yard. We're doing a toooon of work to it though, so it always looks a hot mess. It's very slope-y, so we're terracing it and building lots of structural walls.
We use our yard A LOT - mosquitoes or no mosquitoes. I can't wait til DD is old enough to run around outside. Right now she freaks out when there's wind in her face, so we don't get to be outside nearly enough

This thread is giving me total house-envy! We don't have a backyard, or any yard at all. However, we are within walking distance of a park. I not so secretly hope that some sea grapes, sand and the Atlantic make up my backyard one day!

Yes! We have a bit more than 1/2 an acre.
It is all grass, and terraced into three levels. The middle terrace has a garden bed. We also have a patio right off the sliding back door.
We don't really get many mosquitos. We are outside a ton!

We have a small backyard, but that's what we wanted. We wanted enough room for a deck and playhouse for LO, which we have. (We won't be building a deck or playhouse for awhile though). Our front yard is a pretty good size, however!
