I used to have an Ikea Ektorp pull out sofa in my living room and it was pretty comfortable for both sitting and sleeping, but a little big for an office. My mom has a jennifer convertibles pull out and it's terribly uncomfortable both ways.

We have a futon, the kind with the black tube-frame that everyone had in college. Given that we have house guests maybe once a year, if that, it works for us. It's in the nursery as that's also our guest room. In our next home we home to have an actual guest bed and may or may not keep the futon as well.

Edited to add - we bought a decent futon mattress so it's fairly comfortable, though firm, to lie on. (I like a firm bed). Sitting on a futon is, well, sitting on a futon. It is what it is. It is no la-z-boy, that's for sure. We will probably buy a feather topper or memory foam topper for it since my mom may stay with us a few weeks after baby is born, and I doubt she'll want to sleep on the hard futon mattress for that long.
