A house in our neighbourhood burnt down on Saturday night. All 3 of the houses floors were completely engulfed in flames and even though neighbours (and fire fighters looked) tried to get anyone in the house out there was a women (a mother) who was found dead in the basement once the fire was put out.
The article talked about how obviously the fire departments feel terrible about fatalities due to fire because they try to be so diligent about getting anyone and everyone out. They also mentioned trying to educate people on fire escape plans.
We do not have one. There is a ladder under our bed that can be used on our window to get us out if we needed, but we do not have any known "plan".
Do you have a fire escape plan for your home?
Because of that I always keep a pair of shoes next to my bed (I wasn't wearing shoes the first-and hopefully only-time that has happened). Where we live now, it wouldn't be a big deal. We are on the ground floor, and there is the main exit (front door) off the living room and a back exit off the bedroom. The kitchen window is low enough that it would work as an escape as well.
