I think my new office space will be in the formal dining area when/if I return to work after baby 3.
Do you have an home office space in an open area? How do you like it?

We got rid of the office space when LO1 was born (office became her room), we originally moved it to the basement and we NEVER used it so we just got rid of it all together. I keep all our bills in a system in the kitchen and other paperwork is in our safe in our master closet.

I love it! Back against wall facing out. I think it is good feng shui. Better than in a bedroom, for instance.

It's in a corner of the living room and I hate it
We're in a tiny (rented) townhouse with two bedrooms and I hate that DH has to work in the middle of our downstairs area. I can't really have people over or do much downstairs when he's working.
I would think about moving it to our bedroom if we end up staying here longer though.

@.twist.: I think I will hate it too! I have to use the phone a lot for work and I just don't see it working out! Maybe I can just keep my office stuff in LO 3's room and make the baby sleep in my room during the day when he/she isn't at daycare.

Mine is in our bedroom, but we don't really have room for it to be anywhere else. I wish we had an extra room so I could go in and shut the door!

Ours was in the playroom/office off the living room. But when LO and I would get home, DH would still be working (when working from home) and the french doors wouldn't hide him and she freaked when he would shut the doors. So we moved DH's office into the guest room till we get the basement finished. She has a whole playroom now and it works out much better.

@autumnlove: I'm thankful that I don't work from my office/desk area. I honestly don't think I could! But I hate it for doing our banking and taxes and stuff. My desk is always a mess, it's a desk I had when I was a teenager and it's blue. It is just such an eyesore! Not to mention if I'm trying to do the above, it's hard to concentrate with kids digging through lego or watching a movie. wah wah.

My office was in our den. We live in an old craftsman, so while it was in it's own space, there's no door (just a large opening with columns). I loved working in there, but once baby was born, we hired a nanny, and I moved my office down to our basement. It was too distracting to work next to where the nanny was.

Open area in the living room. It's been that way since we moved in together, just switched to another room when we moved to our condo. It's in a nook area of our living room. Here's a picture.

My office was turned into lo's nursery and is now in a corner of our dining g room. I love being in that room-- it gets amazing light and better wifi than my old office, is closer to the kitchen for getting water and coffee, and I love spreading out onto the dining room table when I need more space (I'm a grad student so this is great when gradig or writing something that means I need to quote lots of books). I don't like though that it's hard for me to work now at night or when lo is home and awake-- it's open to the rest of the living area and so if dh wants to watch tv or if lo sees me, there's no work getting done!

Mine is in our dining room in a corner and I HATE IT. I was in our guest room before we turned it into a nursery for baby #2. Now I have a corner desk and it sucks not having my own dedicated work space. I work from home, and having the kids around (my mom watches them) all day while I work makes me totally crazy.
I do have pocket doors in our kitchen, so I can close it off when I'm in a meeting (I work for a videoconferencing company, so all of our calls are in video), but it still sucks.

@HabesBabe: We're moving this week but that's the same set up we have now and I also hate it!
We're not going to have a dedicated office space at out new house either but at least it won't be out in the open!

@autumnlove: the doors sliiiiiiiiiiiightly help. but char still pounds on them, and i still hear the kiddos and my mom playing in the living room (just on the other side of the doors). but better than no doors, i guess! do you WFH full time?
@coopsmama: does the new place have a better office situation? i hope so! esp with all the house drama you've had lately, an improved office space would make things worth it!

@HabesBabe: We have a 4th bedroom that is just about the size of our new master (it's huge!) at the new house so I'm going to use that as a guest space + office space. We rarely have guests so that should work out just fine!

@HabesBabe: yes, FT and I need to make calls all day! The kids will be home M & T with DH but will be in daycare/preschool for the rest of the week.

@autumnlove: ugh yes, this is me exactly! well, minus the daycare, so they are here all day, errrrday.

@HabesBabe: ahh! I'm pretty sure DH will have his hands full and he won't be able to keep them out of my space all the time.

I did, and it was tough. DS saw me working and wanted to play. Now it doesn't work at all because he'll just climb in my lap and start pushing buttons. It might work if your husband can distract the kids, though...

Oh yes, mine is in the living room. Right now it's just DH and me, so it works ok. He's good about turning down the TV and staying quiet when I'm on the phone, but I frequently have to remind him to stop talking to me while I type emails.
Who knows what it will be like once LO is here. There's nowhere else for me to be cause our house is a 2 BR. 2nd BR will be LO's nursery.

We have an office but it is off the kitchen and next to the entryway. It's great when LO isn't home. DH uses it to WAH two days a week. There are two glass pocket doors do nothing for noise or keeping LO out. She freaks out when we close the doors because she can see us but can't get to us. We plan to get a blackout shade or something to block the visibility soon. When LO2 comes in June it will double as a guest room.

Yes - in the corner of the family room (main play space). Since I have to finish up patient charting from home, it is nice to have it near LO's play space so I can multitask. since we live in the city, having a separate office just isn't feasible. Too expensive

Ours are set up in the playroom, and it's a disaster. When my son is home and my husband needs to work, they need to be separated on different floors!
