I have a little bit of a southern accent. It's only noticeable when I saw certain words. My husband doesn't have an accent, but his brother has a Louisiana one.

I guess sometimes my New Yorker accent comes through!

Nope. While I grew up in Texas, the town I grew up in hosted A LOT of transplanted northerners because many huge corporations relocated from places like NYC to my hometown (Plano, TX) because it was so cheap to build there. That was the reason my family moved from New York to Texas when I was a baby.

So, not only were there not a lot of thick accents in my town, all of my family was from New York, so I really wasn't exposed to any thick Texas-related accents until I met my husband and his family. I could barely understand my FIL when I first met him, but now I'm used to it.

I probably have a little bit more of an accent now because of the amount of time I spend with them and my husband.

Sure do! I grew up right outside of Boston. I definitely drop my 'r" and put them in places that they do not belong. (ie vodka-r)
My husband is from RI, and sounds very New York at times so it will be interesting to see what LO picks up from each of us...

I'm a native Brooklynite. I don't have a "new yawk" accent and lots of people have assumed that I'm from California (?!).

I grew up near Chicago, and don't think I have much of an accent, but hubby says I do when I get excited or angry!

I grew up in RI and thankfully escaped the accent. I've since spent time in Virginia, New York, and Canada. My accent is mostly neutral, but my vocab has a whole bunch of random regional colloquialisms thrown in which confuses people.

I was born and raised in OK, but don't have an accent. However, since moving to Texas and opening our shop in the country, I tend to have a southern drawl only on certain words on occasion (e.g. why becomes whaye). I do say/use y'all a lot though!

My parents and DH have Boston accents, and I did until speech therapy in 2nd grade (for a lisp - losing the accent was a byproduct). My brother also outgrew his - we come from a suburb where people don't have the accent. It's funny though - DH, his sister and one brother have Boston accents, but his other brother doesn't - I think it had to do with their groups of friends, and that the non-accent brother moved far away for college, while the rest stayed in MA.

@Pipers Mommy: I know what you mean about adding the "R"s where they don't belong. Growing up we would tease my mom for saying "Pizz-er" (for pizza) and "Seg-er" (for Sega). And also for saying stuff like"the both a ya's" (for "the both of you")

I only have an accent (Southern) when I'm either talking to other people with a strong southern accent, or if I'm trying to be super polite. ("Thank y'all so much!")

I have lived in the mid-west/heartland my entire life and I don't think I have an accent. The only thing that sticks out in my mind is we use a lot of hanging prepositions (i.e. where are you at?) which drives our English teachers nuts around here, but it's a hard habit to break!

Even though I grew up in brooklyn, I don't normally carry a brooklyn accent. It does come out randomly sometimes.

I definitely have a toned-down version of a Boston accent. It comes out full force when I'm tired or tipsy but I keep it mostly under control. There are certain words though, like "drawer", that perfectly display my accent. There is no other way to say it for me than "draaw". I just can't physically do it.

Yep, I have a southern accent. I don't think its that strong, but my friends like to tell me that I sound "country" a lot. DH has a southern accent too, especially when he says certain words...not even gonna lie, it makes me swoon like we're teenagers again ha!

nope! many of my ESL friends have commented on how easy my english is to understand vs. other ppl who have an accent. they say i sound like people on american tv shows, lol. grew up in MA, but not on the south shore or in boston, so i don't have either of those MA accents =D

Yes, only notice it or BE noticed for it when I travel. I hate it because ppl want me to say y'all a lot. *eyeroll*

I don't have an accent but I definitely have some words that come out funny (by funny I mean in Baltimore-speak). I say roof and woof funny and have been told I speak like a Baltimorian. I might have lost a lot of that moving south, though.

ETA: The first communication I had with Hops' parents was on the phone. I could hear their Boston accents then but I don't hear them so much anymore.

I don’t think I do. I’ve lived in CA my whole life though and I honestly don’t think most Californians have an accent!

I do not have a distinctive accent at all, but it's funny what some people say when they hear me on the phone for the first time. I was born and raised just outside of New York City (generic "East Coast" accent) and I have been told that I sound like I'm from the Midwest. Also, I lived in the South for a number of years and still say some words with a somewhat Southern accent.

I'm originally from Newfoundland but have lived in Alberta most of my life. People still tell me and my mother we have pretty strong Newf accents (my sister wasn't talking when we left, so she sounds like your regular run of the mill Canadian!).
