When I say certain words, I can totally hear how "Canadian" I sound. But other than that, I don't.

Nope, no NY accent here. IVe been told I sound like I'm from Connecticut, whatever that means?

I have a cross between Canadian and Michigan accent. It's bizarre

I've had people tell me I say things weird. I'm only from MI! Lol...not sure what they mean...

I suppose people from other places all have accents to other people. No one would think they themselves have an accent....right?

I've been asked where I'm from but I've never been told I have an accent. I'm from Michigan but have lived in the south since I was around 3 or 4. I have no southern accent so I guess that's why people ask where I'm from. Some words do sound very midwestern though (mainly things like "hand" and "sandwich" with how the a sounds).

Maybe? People say that I sound like I'm from California.

I don't have a NYC accent--people usually think I'm from California or somewhere in England. Cali, I can understand, but England?

@Bao: you guys say paap . Most mi accents I hear turn o sounds into a sounds

i don't think so. i have a few friends who have moved here from abroad and they've found my speech easier to understand than other people's because, as they've put it, i 'sound like television' =D

@prettylizy: Haha I feel like I say pop, but obviously I wouldn't know. Now I'm over here "pop, paap, pop, pop, paap? lol...

I've been told that I have no accent by some and then called out for being American by others. Guess it depends on whose ear is listening.

@oliviaoblivia: I noticed a slight "accent" of some sort when we met!

I do! I can't stand to hear my voice on recording. It irritates me!!

@Bao:
Lol!!!! I can just picture you sitting there doing that

@Rubies: it's funny, now when I go home some people think I'm Canadian! I think it's because I used the word toque in a sentence.

Nope, I'm from the Midwest but I have the typical American "non-accent" accent. For some reason, I get asked if I'm Canadian a lot by people in England.

@prettylizy: hahahaha oh my gosh DH and I are getting a kick out of this!!! We are like "we are totally saying it that way"...then we realized because she is from MI too. We think we are saying it the right way. I'd like to know how others say words we say, differently. Side note, we point to where we live on our hand too
whoever this girl is, lives exactly where we do. Thanks for sharing!

@Bao: I'm originally from WI and I used to point on my hand where i was from too. I forgot I did that until you said it.
I've lived in the south for awhile now and have married a southerner. I've got a mixed accent. Most people from the midwest will say they don't have an accent, as it's the TV voice. It's the easiest to understand accent.

When I moved to California people were really bummed that I didn't have a Boston accent. Sometimes I fake it though!
pomegranate / 3872 posts
I guess a little bit. A linguistics professor once went around the room and had us read a sentence and guessed where we were from and said I was 'an educated New Jersey' lol. I guess that's better than a nasty New Jersey accent.

@Bao: lol, glad you guys had a laugh. She sounds like pure Michigan to me
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@prettylizy: we thoroughly enjoyed it and had a few laughs!

I have a kiwi accent but when I was in California we got asked if we were British. To us the Brits sound completely different but I guess it would be like state-to-state variance for you all.

No. But my mom is from Ohio so I do say some words like she does. DH makes fun of me. Weird that I picked up a little bit of her Ohio accent instead of my dad's NY accent.

I've moved around so much in my life I don't have an accent, although I've heard if I'm a little tipsy, I start sounding like a Chicago Super Fan. Very attractive, I'm sure.
