When we were looking for our house, we didn't really want an HOA or HOA fees, especially DH. He wanted to be able to do what he wants with his house and not have someone watching his every move. He was willing to compromise if we absolutely loved the house and it wasn't a super restrictive HOA (we looked in a couple of neighborhoods with fees to keep up the grounds but that are really relaxed about what you can do with your property).

We ended up with a house in a small neighborhood with no HOA. We close next week! It is still a beautiful little neighborhood and we don't have to worry about that now. We know of some extremely restrictive neighborhoods around here and we just couldn't do that but we do see the benefits of those neighborhoods as well.

Do you have an HOA? It seems like it's becoming a lot more common.
