We do, but it's just fees for trash and recycling pickup. It would have been more expensive for us to buy our own trash and recycling pickup, so it didn't bother us too much. I actually wish it was a little more bossy, because we have some nasty houses in our neighborhood, dragging down our value

@Anagram: Dude, I am glad you find these people funny because I want to punch them all in the face. Like the person whose dog crapped in the lobby? And the other person who put a sign on it? Or the time when we organized a Halloween party for the kids, and someone ripped the invitation into a million pieces and shoved it into my mailbox? I am still watching my back, those are the kind of people who knife you.
Anyone who thinks mankind is inherently good has never been involved with a condo board.

Yes, it's fairly cheap anad doesn't really do anything besides maintain/mow a public area.

We live in a condo so yes. And, ironically, I want to be on the board because I don't like how our current board is handling some things!

@LindsayInNY: when you get on the board, just don't buy a new console table and mirror for the foyer without a professional to help.

@mamimami: our building now is a HUGE step up in the "respect" area. We don't have major things like dog poop in the hall (thank goodness!). That's just unexcusable.

@Anagram: Well, we have 11 different buildings so I could buy 11 different console tables and mirrors? We've been having issue with smokers downstairs and I would love to get on the board and make some changes with that...

We live in a condo, so we have an HOA, and I haaaateee it!! We pay $520 a month for it too! It does cover water though, so at least we don't have to worry about that. We live on the second story and we had a tree outside that was literally growing its branches against our roof. I requested that they trim the tree twice and they NEVER did it, even when they said they would. DH finally got fed up and decided to go out and buy a trimmer and do it himself! Our HOA has also gotten us in at least two current litigations that have been on-going for more than a year, and we were unable to re-finance when the rates were amazing, AND if we were to sell our condo, the buyers would have to pay all-cash because no bank will offer a loan when an HOA is under litigation!! AHHHHH!!! I want to rip my hair out!!!!

We do, but there are few restrictions. Like, no junk in your front yard or furniture other than outdoor furniture outside (which really is an issue in Missouri). We pay $47 a year, and it covers a security car, snow plowing, and common area upkeep.

Where we are right now has two. One for our section of the neighbourhood, which is $153 a month and they take care of the landscaping park thing right by our house as well as snow removal, etc. Then there's one for the entire neighbourhood, which is $450/year and that's for usage of the private lake.
Our new neighbourhood doesn't have any.
