Do you have an inheritance?

I inherited from my grandparents. It paid for college and my home's downpayment. It's all gone now, but thankfully, I have no student loans.

Can you inherit your parents debt?? I am so dumb when it comes to this stuff.

Yes, we will both have an inheritance. Mine will be pretty hefty which is nice, but also very sad and stressful at the same time. It's already brought out a very ugly side of my two sisters and we aren't nearly as close as we used to be because of it. I've always been the favorite so they've started to preemptively distance themselves from me in preparation for my sum to be bigger than theirs - even though that's not going to be the case at all.

Whatever my parents leave behind, but I don't like to think about it.

Yes, I probably will. My parents' goal is to live off of their pensions and leave their 401k money and houses to my brother and I. They also want to create college trust funds for any kids we might have.

But I'm not exactly counting on having that money. And DH's parents both have decent jobs, but practically no retirement savings, so who knows what'll happen with that.

I guess? My parents live comfortably so there will probably be something passed on to us kids but not like a million bucks or anything crazy.

I'm more of a sentimental kind of person anyway, my inheritance from my grandfather was his M&M dispenser (I used to sit on his lap and eat M&Ms out of the dispenser on his end table, such fond childhood memories!) and money for my wedding dress.

@StbHisMrs: that's so crazy! I mean, I'm sure there's stuff you'd want to keep, but saying you have to keep stuff? I mean, my grandma has a ton of antiques too, but hell if any of them would ever end up in my house...

I am assuming I will get some sort of trust when my parents pass away, but I don't like to think about that. Their house is paid off, and they plan to sell their business in the next few years, so I assume there would be no debts to pay off (thankfully).

And definitely check your loans, people! They do not magically disappear when you die! My roommate sadly passed away a few years ago, and her parents had to use her life insurance to pay for all her student loans from nursing school. It took everything.

I guess whatever my mom leaves behind, but that's not something I want to think about or to ever have happen!

Yes, but I don't like to think about it because it means my parents have passed away.

@Modern Daisy - You personally don't but usually the estate of the person who died has to pay it off.

Yep. My grandmother recently passed so I inherited quite a bit from her. When my parents go, I'm an only child so I'll get everything that they have (a paid off house, some investments, few other assets). I don't like to think about it though.

This has actually been a popular topic of conversation in my family lately. My mom is having a really difficult time dealing with my aunt and her greediness as far as my grandmothers will is concerned. It'll suck having to deal with my parents death on my own (or at least, without any siblings) but not having to go through what my mom is dealing with right now will be nice. It makes a loved ones death so much more difficult when the heirs can't get along.

As for my husband, he's supposed to inherit a great deal of money when his grandmother dies (his grandfather made sure of that before he passed). That'll set us up real nice if it actually happens. I don't think we'll see much from his parents. He has 3 brothers and I don't think they really have a retirement. I just hope we don't get stuck with their debt.

DH will but I will not. I'll probably inherit debt... yay....

Yes, including several hundred acres of property. But I don't know how much--I don't want to--and I don't expect it. I feel like my parents worked their entire lives for it, and it is *theirs* . . . I would have no issues if they spent it all and sold the land!

Not an inheritance like a trust fund or anything. My aunt and uncle told all of us nieces and nephews that we’re all included in their will, and my husband is an only child so when my MIL passes he/we will inherit some very valuable land and a lot of assets. But, it’s nothing I count on receiving as you never know what someone’s financial future will hold. In particular, you never know what retirement homes and nursing homes will cost; they can decimate even substantial amounts of investments.

I’ll inherit some beautiful jewelry, art and antiques from my parents. I imagine the proceeds of their home will cover the estate’s debts, but again, I don’t count on receiving any money. And that’s ok!

That'd be a big fat no. My parents are not well off.

Is it weird that I have not even thought about this?? I imagine my sister and I will just split whatever my mom and dad/step-mom leave behind, but that won't be for a while (hopefully!!). I feel like my parents have already done so much for me, I would prefer that they just spend their money now on things they love doing

No idea about DH but, again, I imagine it would be a very long ways into the future.

We'll inherit the company DH & I work for from my parents, a paid off house here & a paid off house at the beach, some land, cars and money from my parents. We'll get some furniture and debt from DH's side.

Nope! And I don't think DH does either, at least not that we know of.

I will inherit some property in british columbia. I think about 3/4 of an acre.

I will probably also have a small sum of money as well.

I do have a brother and I know my parents are going to leave him something but I don't know what.

    I inherited a bit from my mom/grandpa.

Not much but it helps. I don't think DH will.

I don't like to think about it, but I believe I would have a sizeable something from my parents... they have multiple investment properties, stocks and other investments, and are quite comfortable. Nothing from DH's side. Not something I want to deal with for a looong time!

Like others, not something we want to really consider but on the passing of our parents we'll inherit between 6-7 figures between us.
What was far more touching is that we had a family friend when we were younger that we considered an uncle. He was still single when he passed away at 42 (almost 15 years ago- sheesh) and bequeathed all his adopted nieces and nephews (3 in our family, 4 in another) $1000. I still remember that to this day!
