No, they are not recommended unless it's made by the manufacturer of your seat. They can interfere with the install (same goes for a flat towel).

Nope, since they're not recommended. I'm sure our leather seats have been somewhat damaged, but they'll probably have a carseat on them for the remainder of the time we have the car!

There are some carseats that allow something under the seat, but the vast majority do not - they can mask a bad install and cause the carseat to not work correctly in an accident.
We do have a seat cover that came with our vehicle from the manufacturer, which is allowed (I've checked with multiple car seat techs).

No, for the same reasons as above. I have cloth seats in my car anyway, so I'm not terribly concerned about them being damaged.

No- same as above, I don't want anything that could compromise the safety of the seat and installation. So far the only damage to the seat is the seat back is a little dirty from her kicking it with her shoes on.
I pretty much haven't even told dh that these things exist since I don't want to fight him that it isn't as safe.

we got them, but we never used them because they bunched way too much in install and we didn't think they were safe.

Nope. I figure by the time my future 2nd LO is out of a carseat, it might be time for a new car anyway? Haha!

Nope. I figure we will have some kind of car seat or booster seat in our car for the foreseeable future since our LO is 3 and we plan on having a second sometime in the next couple years. By the time they are out of a car seat we will probably need a new car. Hopefully our car lasts that long!

Our diono GTX seats came with seat protectors that we used underneath them.

Yes, we have a Britax seat and they allow the Britax seat protector. So we got the Britax one. Not sure how much it helps though!

No, I wouldn't want to risk them interfering with car seat safety. We're going to have car seats for a long time and we'll probably be due for new cars by the time we're done with the seats anyway so I'm not concerned with protecting the seats.

No. Safety aside, every seat protector model I looked at had reviews saying the black mats bled/rubbed dye onto tan leather seats, which we have. Stains are worse than dents I suppose.

Yes we have one, I didn't know they were bad for safety. We install using isofix though so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. The seat marked the leather in our last car really badly so we got one as soon as we got the new car.

Yup, we have a seat protector now in our new car. We didn't in our old car and regret it. I don't entirely buy into the carseat protectors-are-evil stuff.

@Anagram: thanks for that link! I actually hadn't thought about the food crusting issue, as we have been lucky enough to only have one vomit issue and I only give her non messy foods in the car. I imagine is be a lot more tempted if she was a puker.
That said, so far I have seen no damage from the seat itself, a chicco next fit. But the bottom is pretty smooth.

@Foodnerd81: It's probably our infant car seat, but it left little micro splits in the leather seat in the back where the grooves are. But husband is super anal about his car, so he insisted on the seat protector for the new Highlander. BUT, I helped with the install and put all my weight on it while he tightened the straps to get a tight install, so I feel pretty good about it
