get a paper cup, throw some banana peel/fruit in it, cover with plastic wrap, poke a small hole in the plastic.
once they find their way into the cup, toss it!

@chopsuey: wow I have never heard that trick! I will try it

Apple cider vinegar works, too. We put it in a small glass bowl so that we can get the plastic wrap good and tight, and then poke a few holes.

OR...drink a bottle of white wine and leave a tiny bit in the bottom of the bottle...they'll drown themselves
I did this by accident last week, but literally caught 20 over night. I hate them so much!!

OMG grossest thing ever happened to us just last week. Fruit flies were coming out in droves. It was horrendous. I coding figure out why there were so many, and we set trap after trap and there were still tons! Then it hit me. I hadn't taken out our compost pail since J was born 10 weeks ago. I brought it out from under the sink and opened it. They swarmed out. It was like a horror movie!!

I second the apple cider vinegat, works great. I put a squirt of dish liquid in too to break the surface tension of the vinegar so the flies drown.

@Mrs Green Grass: that sounds like a great method!

@Mrs. Pen: Used to have them. Gross.
Make a trap!
Take a plastic water bottle. Cut the top off near the taper but not in the taper. put a little water and a thin slice of banana, maybe a drop of beer or wine in the bottle.
Poke a hole in the plastic lid. If you can't, remove the cap, poke a hole in a piece of foil and rubberband it around where the cap was.
Invert the top with your cap-hole in it. Tape with clear tape.
Make several. Throw them out after a week or two.
It's like chopsuey's suggestion but it lasts longer and they don't fly out because they try to fly to the top where the tape is.
