I've never had a garage sale before, but we want to have one at the end of the summer to clear out the house of baby gear, toys, and other household items we need to get rid of. Do you have garage sales? Are they usually successful?

Our neighborhood has a group sale one weekend. We've never participated, but may do so this year just to clear out some of our piled up stuff!

Yep! We've had 2 in the last 3 years to clear out junk. We just had one last Saturday and made $200!

DH and my mom have one on an annual basis at my parents house. It's a great way to get rid of stuff, and they make out like bandits! {Whatever doesn't sell gets dropped off at The Salvation Army.}

@mrskc: @shinymama: is there a good rule to follow when pricing things? Some sales I've been to I thought things were WAY over priced but some I've been to had things as low as .10...I'd want my stuff to sell, and love giving good deals, but some things are brand new so would like to get a small portion back at least.

@Bao: DH tends to sell newish/baby stuff on Craigslist in order to get a better price. He tends to price larger/expensive items slightly above what he wants to get for them to factor in haggling.

@Bao: My family has an annual sale to raise money for MS (my SIL does a 40 mile walk to raise funds for it. She was diagnosed a few years ago)
We don't price most things. That way we can be more flexible and it doesn't take nearly as much time. People ask how much something is, we tell them, and they might try to haggle down. But that way it's easier to change prices as the day drags on and we start wanting to get rid of things quicker.

No, but I've been wanting on, especailly before we haev the next LO! But I want to wait until after we find out gender so that way we can get rid of clothes if we need too!

Yes, they are so.much.fun!
Successful in getting rid of stuff always, the money making "value" decreases as the day goes on as we just start giving stuff away to ensure it doesn't come back in the house!

@Bao: I don't put prices on things. I just let people know how much when they ask. I usually price things pretty cheap. Like $1 for jeans and $.50 for shirts and $5 for bigger nicer stuff. I go as low as $.25 for some items. Usually I ask for more early on then as the morning goes by, I start reducing the price. I also advertise our sale on craigslist to get more people there. For nicer things, I would list them individually on craigslist or be firm on your price and try listing it on CL after your sale.
