This may be a weird question, but I was speaking with an accountant yesterday regarding filing our local taxes (I was having trouble because we moved mid year) and the accountant told me that some states don't require people to file local taxes! I am envious! Do you have to file local?

Yes, in Cali here. My DH used to live in Nevada and he did not. How lucky!

Washington state doesn't have to. Not good for infrastructure, but it was kind of nice. We owe in "redistributionist" Utah. I love the irony!

Texas doesn't have state/local taxes. However, we compensate that with higher property taxes. Ouch!!

@Pirouette: OH tell me about it! When I file my NYS taxes I hold my breath and pray I dont owe anything.

This year we paid NY state tax and NJ state tax( since DH and I work in different states), but not the NYC tax----so I guess that's a "yay"? Actually, the NYC tax is taken out of DH's paycheck, but then somehow it was refunded (either in the NYS tax or the NJ state tax---can't remember).
Complicated. =(

@bunnylove08: ha this year is an anomaly (we have a massive tax bill all around) but usually i get a little refund from the IRS and ALWAYS owe NYS, no matter what i do. So annoying!
@Anagram: I got you beat! we owe IRS, NYS, NJ and NYC! god i love tax time
it should be refunded in whichever state you live - so you pay the tax where you work and get a credit where you live. and i agree, the fact that there's no reciprocity between NY/NJ maddens me, it makes it so complicated!

@Pirouette: I know...it's weird. Somehow we got a larger refund from NYS than we own NJ....not sure how that happened, but we'll take it!

@Anagram: ha, it's probably the NYC tax that was withheld (NYS+NYC rates are higher than just NJ)...enjoy the refund!

...local taxes? We pay state & fed (of course)...but what is local? (AZ here)

@JennyLayneAZ: In my area, you have to pay 1% of your income to the municipality/school district where you live.
it should be refunded in whichever state you live - so you pay the tax where you work and get a credit where you live. and i agree, the fact that there's no reciprocity between NY/NJ maddens me, it makes it so complicated!
