I got my learner's permit when I turned 15, and was able to get my extended restricted license to drive at night after just 3 months to get to and from my job and extracurricular activities. There's no good public transportation where I live, and my parents were desperate to stop driving me around.

16.5. I had to wait until my parents got the car fixed! My sister was a late driver. She didn't get her license until 25, and I taught her how to drive! (She is 6 years older than I am)

16. I also discovered that day at the DMV that my birth certificate does not match any other legal document. I convinced the worker to put down my name and not the legal birth name.

I got mine when I was 19 or 20. I was lucky to live near some great public transportation so I put it off. Some of my friends who grew up in New York City never got theirs!

Learner's permit at 14.5, license at 15. I think the law has changed to a graduated system now, thank goodness!

Drivers license at 16, but i had a school permit at 14 that allowed me to drive to and from school only. (we lived in the country outside of town.)

It's completely embarrassing to admit, but I didn't get my DL until I was 27! I always lived places where it didn't make financial sense to have a car (great city transit), and D loves to drive, so I just never bothered until after E was born.

I got it in my 20's and then moved to three different cities with extensive public transportation and let it lapse. I haven't gotten one again. Driving doesn't really play a role in my everyday life.

Permit at 17, license at 18.
Back then, in my state, if you waited until you were 18 to get your license, you didn't need to do behind the wheel drivers training. I was still in high school and couldn't afford the $300 class and my parents wouldn't pay for it. So I just waited.

17. I do not live somewhere with good public transportation. If you don't drive you're screwed!

At 17 I got my learner's permit, and my full license 6 weeks later. The next year they came out with graduated licenses, an allowed you to get your permit at 16. It just occurred to me that I've had my license half my life, plus a few months.

I got mine at 16. I drove for two years in high school and have rarely been behind the wheel of a car since! One of my goals is to never own a car and it has been a reality for almost 17 years!

Learners permit around 20ish and license at 25 when I moved out of the city and would need to drive/get a car.
