I've known and worked with a whole lot of lawyers. I've only met four types of happy lawyers... here they are, in decreasing order of happiness (according to my entirely arbitrary standards and experience).

* Public service lawyers - Lawyers working for the DA (or other government body) or for a non-profit. DAs and ADAs aren't always happy, but they seem animated by a sense of purpose.

Actually I haven't met that many happy non-profit lawyers (the pay is just so low), but they do seem happier than the average lawyer.

* IP lawyers - Lawyers working in IP tend to love the intellectual challenge of the work. Plus it pays super well.

* Real estate law - I've heard it's great because you can really master it and then you have great job security and/or can work from home a lot. Or even go into real estate development.

* Litigators - I've never met any happy lawyers doing corporate work, but I do know some happy litigators.

Anyway I have to say that I've met a lot of lawyers over the years, and to my surprise most of them regretted their career choice. I would love to hear from happy lawyers and their friends though, as I love the law and have been thinking about getting a law degree! (Not to practice but more just because I like it.)

Do you know any happy lawyers? What do (or did) they do?
