Our neighbors at our old house adopted her two foster kids. But I think she's the only one we know in real life who has adopted.

Omg when we were staying with my SIL her neighbor (after 3 failed IVFs) adopted twins. About 6 months later she got pregnant on her own...with twins.
And one of our close friends had a band-mate that adopted two little girls from China. I wasn't friends with him, but I'd met him (and his wife and girls) several times.

Yep, growing up my mom had a good friend who adopted internationally x3, and now one of my friends has x2. Between the two families they cover almost every continent, lol!
Otherwise, I know a few families where the step parent has officially adopted the child(ren).

My mom's cousin adopted her son over 35 years ago. One of my good friends from school was adopted, as was her brother. Friends of ours are going through an international adoption right now. Unfortunately, it is a very slow and tedious process. I hope they are able to take their baby home soon.

There was a family friend when I was really young that adopted a sibling group of 7 from the Philippines! They also had 3-4 children of their own. I thought it would be the coolest thing to have 7 more siblings! It was such a beautiful thing.
Some of my best friends growing up were adopted.
A family I babysit for adopted their second child from Colombia, another family I used to nanny for are foster parents, a college professor adopted a little girl from China, a church family adopted a boy from the Phillipines, family friends adopted two girls from Cambodia, and a family I was homeschooled with were foster parents for a lot of children and adopted over 5 of them!
That's a lot. And there are more that I'm not thinking of right now. I think adoption is amazing.

@regberadaisy: It got worse....her husband left (during her pregnancy) because he was too overwhelmed. He ended up going back (and right into marriage counseling) but geez, you leave your pregnant wife alone with two babies?!? (Her mom moved in to help. SIL and I sent over meals a lot...she was weird about non-family babysitting else I would have tried to help more.)

I know a number of people. The closest relative is my cousin who's adopted and a few years younger than me. They almost couldn't adopt because back in the day my uncle was considered too old at 37. A number of my friends growing up were adopted and a few neighbors. And now a lot of the people I used to work with and a couple friends.

Yep! Lots. My best friend's dad and a close friend from college were adopted. My mom has two different friends that adopted, and two of my nieces and one nephew was adopted.
We are planning to grow our family by adoption in addition to having biological children.
It's funny - I didn't realize until I was in college that many people adopt because of infertility. I always just thought of adoption as another way to have a family and never connected the two.

My grandparents adopted my aunt. She was older (8 or 9) and her mom and my grandma were cousins.

Yes! My life is full of adoption! One of my sisters, a cousin just got a placement today (and boy was that a tough roller-coaster), Mrs. Cowboy, Mr. Jacks' mom and brother, friends who have adopted, including the friends we're on vacation with right now. Adoption is such a beautiful thing!
And @honeybee: I think that would be a wise move, friend

A couple we used to go to church with has two children that they adopted. They fostered for several years and have had the two kids since they were babies. They also have two biological children. There was a third little girl that they wanted to adopt but the biological aunt ended up with custody. It's been a long time but I remember it being a very strange situation and it was very sad.
