Yes. I average 65-70 wpm (although the morning I had to take the typing test for a civil service again I only managed 55, )

I do! Speaking of things our kids won't do...I took a typing/word processing class in h.s.!

I never learned the "proper" way, so I have my own weird way of doing it, but I type very well and fast (never actually figured out WPM)! I'm using a keyboard right now that has no labels on it!

@MoonMoon: I remember being in a typing class in H.S. and then I wasn't..... I have no idea why I dropped it though!

I took a typing class in middle school, and again in high school. It's weird to think that our kids won't have to take one, since they will likely be typing from a very early age (I imagine that they will be teaching it in kindergarten before long!)

Sure do! But I don't really do it properly. I just sort of type however I want.

@pui: there are online tests where you can check your wpm-they're pretty fun too!

I do! I'm a graduate of "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" ha! My mom made us do typing programs as part of our homeschool curriculum and I'm glad she did. I'm pretty good at typing and I can average 60-70 wpm. Depends what I'm typing and what type of computer I'm on.

Yes I do, in college I was typing around 100 words a minute, I believe that I'm doing it the proper way. I will say that I tend to get to going too fast sometimes & you can definitely tell in my spelling

@MrsBrewer: It's a novelty... just geek cred. It's also a really nice quality keyboard. http://www.daskeyboard.com/model-s-ultimate/

I can type reasonably well, but if you asked me to list out the order of the keys on the keyboard, I can't do it past QWERTY.

@looch: Wow I don't think I could do that either! o_O I just kinda know where they are!

@Mrs. Pen: I never made it through Mavis Beacon! I probably got 1/2 way through, but I loooved the games, especially the one where bugs hit the windshield!
@pui: I've never heard of that before. Pretty cool though!

@MrsBrewer: I never mastered the shark! I always got eaten! ha. But the race car one was fun.

Oh yeah. I took typing in high school and college and frequently used a program at home. I also have worked in administrative positions where I am typing daily for years. I always have my hands on the home row and I think it is a skill that is really beneficial, especially now that nearly everything is done on the computer.

@looch: Soo......I never knew what "qwerty" meant until just now...........My mind is blown for the day!

On a side note, one of my coworkers uses the "dvorak" key layout. Basically all the keys are laid out completely differently than on a qwerty keyboard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard). It's supposed to be a more efficient way of typing. On top of that he ALSO uses a keyboard without labels!
Now THAT is hardcore geeky lmao.

Yes, averaging 90 wpm when I had an office job; probably considerably less now that 95% of my "typing" is on an iPad!

Yes... I think we had to learn it in comp class in school at some point. I'm guessing now a days they just expect kids to know how to type?
I probably don't type 100% the right way tho...

@Mrs. Jump Rope: me too!
I know how to type. My job has me typing between 25,000-30,000 words per week! I can't imagine having to hunt and peck.

Yes, but I'm a programmer, so I spend all day at work on the keyboard. I still mess up a lot, but I'm quick at using backspace I still have trouble with the number keys though.

@pui: I thought I did until I had to type English from a German QWERTZ keyboard. It messed me up so much that I had to buy an English QWERTY.
The punctuation is what gets me.

I do, but most of my coworkers don't, and they type with two fingers, so it DRIVES ME BONKERS. I'm at ~90 wpm.

Yep - I'm a consultant/writer so I hope this is a basic skill I've got a handle on! I average 80 WPM without mistakes.

Yes. I actually did terrible in typing class in high school, but have taught myself to type since then. I'm fast. When I really get going at work it makes people laugh. My editor calls me "lightning fingers."

Yes! But it was the hardest class I took in 9th grade, hands down.

Yep! We had to take it in late elementary "for fun" and then as an actual class in middle school. I am so thankful for that, now! Typeracer is a fun game to play every once in a while to test your speed. http://play.typeracer.com
It can be awkward for the younger people in the office when our secretaries are in the middle of the range where they're too young to know shorthand but too old to have trained in computers to be speedy. I find myself popping out letters instead of dictating them like we're supposed to because it's just so much faster to do it myself. The older partners still like to dictate, but they can also go months without using a computer since someone else types for them.

Yep. I also used Mavis Beacon in high school! All those AIM days back in middle school made me pretty fast though I took the test @indi: posted an got 77 WPM.

Yes! My parents bought Mario Typing for me and my siblings.
papaya / 10473 posts
I had to take several keyboarding classes in school. I average about 90 or so wpm
honeydew / 7916 posts
My elementary school made us learn proper typing skills instead of teaching us anything else on the computer!
