Last week i bought a bag of tropicana mini tangerine things from target. I though they were Clementines. They were really nice and easy to peel. So i decided to buy more of them from shop rite. They didn't have the tropicana brand but they had something similar that said "clementines" on the bag so I assumed it would be the same thing, until i brought one to work. These are totally different! They are quite dry and hard more like an orange. Now i realize i don't know the difference between tangerines, clementines, Mandarins etc

I do, because I have a 'thing' for produce, lol but there can be a lot of variation in citrus. You might get one batch of clementines that is sweet and juicy and another that is dry. Clementines are short and squat and a little softer. Tangerines have a thicker rind and are usually a little bigger and darker orange.

I think they taste different.... Clementines taste better! And I think tangerines have seeds.

This totally confuses me. In Australia we have Mandarins which are easy to peel, more squashed looking and segmented and then we have oranges which are round and harder to peel and aren't segmented. I always thought a mandarin was just our way of saying clementine?

I bought a bag of tangerines at our local produce place and I can totally tell the difference between mandarins and tangerines now. Mandarins have a thinner peel, tangerines are a little bigger and have a thick peel like an orange. No idea what a clementine is though.

Mandarins and clementines are both Citrus reticulata - just different sub-genuses. The usual sub-genus classifications within the reticulatas are mandarin, tangerine, and satsumas. Clementines (aka Cuties) are a type of tangerine.

I don't think I do know the difference.
What irks my bones is in the grocery store when they sell mulberries as blackberries, I guess they're berries and they're black, but mulberries are not nearly as delicious as blackberries, you can see the stem in the middle of mulberries. -
There are literally thousands of different varieties of citrus...you could probably spend a lifetime studying them and not even scratch the surface of differences! Add to that seasonal changes in the same variety, and you have something that's always changing!
BTW, did you know that limes are not naturally green? They were developed over time to distinguish them from lemons.
