Do you let your pets sleep in your bed? Our dog sleeps near our feet every night and so far it hasn't been a problem. We plan on having LO sleep in a bassinet when she arrives...I'm not sure if that will create any problems, etc.

My dog can't sleep at night unless he's pressed up against a human body.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
We do. They are not the best at staying in one place at night, though. I have woken up to my dog sharing my pillow with me.
We do not plan on co-sleeping but we do plan on having the baby in our room with us for a while. I don't feel like we can get a co-sleeper just because of the dogs, so we'll use a pack-n-play bassinet or something until we move the baby to his/her nursery. We worry about the dogs and the baby but figure, we'll make it work. We can't exactly kick them out now!

Our dog is too big to share the bed. But if you're LO isn't in bed with you, I don't see how it would create a problem.

Both our cats do! They are even more clingy when I'm pregnant.

We start off the night with two humans and two dogs cuddled in bed, but in the middle of the night, our little guy (well, not so little - he's 55 lbs) has moved to the loveseat in our room and our older girl is on her bed on our floor.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
nope. he used to (DH is a pushover) but I put a stop to it. he's fine on the floor, and he's a sheltie so he sheds..and I was sick of inhaling flying dog hairs. our sheets are forever ruined from him sleeping in the bed, its horrible.

Yes, our cat sleeps in our bed. She usually likes to sleep on top of my feet/ankles or draped across my legs. If she gets cold, she'll get under the covers with us
pomegranate / 3716 posts
No, even though I love my dog insanely much. I am a clean freak and can't imagine her in my bed when I think about where her paws have been (even though I wipe her feet w/baby wipes after every walk)... haha. I'm just anal I guess!
Besides, she's a 65 pound greyhound and would take up way too much space!!

My girl kitty sleeps at my feet and my boy sleeps between me and DH. When LO comes I will put a bassinet in our room but I worry the cats will try to sleep with them in bed. If we don't let the cats in the room the sit outside the bedroom door and meow all night so it's not really an option to keep them out.
pear / 1965 posts
Sure do. Only sometimes do we let our big boxer because she takes up so much room. But we usually "rotate" who gets to stay out and in bed with us. Between our four dogs and 4 cats, plus our foster dogs. King size bed or not, still not enough room. So they have to take turns! Haha

I can't imagine letting our little pup sleep in bed with us. I'd be afraid of him messing up our nice bed and mattress or falling off! Our bed is large enough - we have a king size bed - but no way is he allowed! He does sleep in his crate next to us though.
nectarine / 2797 posts
Yup, two cats, one dog, we always have at least one in bed with us. Some mornings it's all three. I hate having the dog there but don't mind the cats...it's the size difference but DH says I'm a hypocrite.
honeydew / 7968 posts
no way would my husband ever let my dog get in bed with us. i wouldn't want that either. 1. she's SO slobbery. 2. she sheds a lot. 3. even though we give her baths every so often, she can still be stinky.

We have our two Malti-Poos in bed every night- one is 8lbs, one is 3lbs. You'd think they wouldn't take up much room but they're the biggest bedhogs you could imagine:) I love cuddling them though.

Yes - our Golden Retriever sleeps in our bed, although he is too big for it! It's getting squishy (he's under a year old - turning 1 in Feb.). I always let my older Golden sleep in my bed (he's living with my parents now, as he's been sick) but he was never a problem and it was before there was another person in my bed!
Beckett is tough because he loves to keep pushing up against you until he pushes you out of the bed! Although we have just started trusting him enough to not do damage to the house, and so we leave our door open. Sometimes he will leave for a while and sleep in the living room which has been great! I am hoping that continues :o)

@mediagirl: You guys sound exactly like us!
Right now, with hubs deployed (and thus extra room in bed) I usually wake up spooning my 75 pound American Bulldog. She loves it, haha. She totally thinks she's a human with her rear legs under the covers, her head on a pillow, and me snuggling her!
Even if I didn't have two dogs in the bed with me I wouldn't want to co-sleep though. It just isn't a habit I want my kids to get used to. I was NEVER allowed in my parents bed - not as a baby and not as a bigger kid. If I was sick or had a nightmare or something, my Dad would come in my room and sit with me until I fell back asleep again. When my parents divorced my Mom took over that job. The idea of having kids in bed with me is just foreign to me!

If both my husband and I are in the bed the dogs are required to be in their crates. If we are alone then we allow the dogs to sleep in the bed.

Our dog sleeps at our legs / feet .. usually on my husbands side! Few times she has tried to creep up closer to our tummy area.

We do most of the time, but they also have their beds to use when we choose to enforce it. We're planning on buying a co-sleeper bed or bassinet.

Ours is allowed up to cuddle first thing in the morning but usually spends the night on the guest room bed.

@sorrycharlie: our sheltie sleeps in bed with us, but you're totally right about inhaling dog hair, yuck! it's pretty gross, yet I even pull our little guy into bed with me when I take naps, he's such a sweet little cuddle bug he usually sleeps leaning against my feet, but when dh gets out of bed before me, the dog takes over his pillow.

Nope, our dog sleeps in a dog bed in our bedroom. He's very happy there and our bed is clean, too.
persimmon / 1202 posts
One of our cats always curls up with us (he travels between my husband's leg, my chest, and in between us). The other cat sometimes sleeps at my feet, or will doze off next to me. Sometime late in pregnancy, though, that'll stop. As I said, the cat sleeps on my chest. I like it. A baby's chest can't handle it. So my cuddly, baby-loving kitty won't get unsupervised cuddle time at least until toddlerhood - which includes when we sleep..
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@nana87: lol! they are pretty good at cuddling. ours always took over DH's pillow when he left in the morning.

I let my dog sleep with me when my DH is away for work, otherwise she sleeps under a blanket in her kennel (she loves it.) I would let her sleep with us all the time, but when we both sleep in the bed, she tends to sleep right on DH head, chest, face (once and only once) and he said that was the end of that. When it's just me and her she sleeps next to my leg.
pear / 1639 posts
Nope! He is a big lab, and I hate dog hair. He sleeps next to me on the floor. He isn't allowed on the bed at all. He can get on DS's bed though if he wants, but he normally doesn't. Our cat sleeps on DS's bed though.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
Nope. Our two dogs have their own beds that they sleep on in our room. I'm trying to implement a no dogs in our room policy, but my husband is more of a softie.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
No, we used to when we first moved but my husband's allergies got bad. I do feel bad seeing my dog sleep by herself. Sometimes, I cuddle with her on the floor or I sleep on the couch.
grapefruit / 4400 posts
We do... our golden hops up whenever we ask him to (otherwise, his bed is next to ours and he just gives us sad puppy dog eyes). Our bed is high, so it's funny to see him try to get on and off the bed! He does make our duvet cover smell, though... and is a total bed hog!
grapefruit / 4187 posts
I used to let my dog sleep with me when I had her, but if I ever get another dog (or any other animal) I will never do this again. That is actually why I'm waiting until we move to the suburbs and have a large house to get a pet. Because I am such a light sleeper and I would definitely need to be able to contain the animal to a section of the house where my sleep is not disturbed. Right now in our 1 bedroom apartment, there is no way to keep a dog from banging/barking at our door.

@sorrycharlie: Same here.
Our dogs used to but I couldn't stand the hair, and them invading our sleeping space

Dog is strictly outside, now the at is too. He had a bad case of fleas even after treatment, I feel terrible leaving him outside but I really dislike fleas.

Our kitties sleep with us every night. My husband hates it, but they usually wrap themselves around my legs, so it's okay.

Nope, our pug is a snore machine and keeps us up! Every once awhile we let him sleep in his dog bed in our room with the A/C on.

Yes, we need a bigger bed. I am surrounded by 3 cats and a dog right now, good thing my husband is at work.
Some nights they move in and we have no space at all, or get pinned in and can't move- not good with a full bladder! The dog is usually at my feet (good thing I'm short!) and the cats come and go as they please.
Lately the biggest war is over my body pillow, two of the cats and myself fight over who gets it- usually I'm hugging it and there is a cat on top of it when I wake up, most often it is this orange guy in my avatar <---.

Sometimes we let our cat sleep in the bed with us but not too often because I am realllly alergic to him and he annoys me too much.
persimmon / 1099 posts
OH, our cats cant be tamed lol. I dont know if its a matter of letting them or not cause they do as they please. I notice since getting pregnant they arent on the bed with us as often. DH sleeps better with the door of our bedroom open so he can "hear" things so they do as they like!
