I grew up eating snowballs all summer. They are HUGE in Maryland with stands everywhere and even snowball trucks. The other day, I was talking to a friend from out of state and she didn't even know what a snowball was. Apparently, they don't even have them in her state. She thought I meant a Rita's Italian Ice or one of those gross snow cones you get at the circus.
Do you have snowballs where you live? Do you like them?

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOOOOOOVE snowballs. My favorite thing to have during the summer especially in this awful Texas heat.

I had such a strong craving for them with my first pregnancy. It was one of my first signs, I downed 2 larges, I couldn't get enough. They didn't have them where I lived though just a Ritas, which was not the same thing and didn't satisfy the craving, so I had to get my fill when I visited my family.

@Bao: It is essentially thinly shaved ice (the crushed ice ones are gross!) with a syrup on it. Most stands have 50+ flavors to choose from and a lot of people put marshmallow or chocolate syrup on top. So bad for you but soooo good in the summer time.

Those were a special treat for me when I lived in Bolivia. We always put sweetened condensed milk on top. Fun fact: the ice used to make them there was chipped off in blocks and carried by mules down from the Andes

There's a malaysian version call Chendol that I LOVE! Miss those so much.

A native Marylander friend from my DH's office introduced all the transplants at the office to snowballs. I LOVE them and am sad that they're hard to find close to DC- I have to go up to Odenton or out east to Bowie or Annapolis or something if I want one!
I love them though. I used to make DH go out of his way to get me them on his way home from work in my first trimester

We call those shaved ice in Cali (ETA: Er I think snow cone too). And I agree, the crushed iced ones are gross.
@regberadaisy: They sell stuff like that in Tainwan when I went. I don't remember what they called it. We just a simple one of shaved ice w/ sweetened condensed milk. It was so good!

Where I am from they are just called snow cones and I am very picky about them, the ice has to be shaved right lol! When I opened it these nasty little things came to mind

When I lived in Louisiana we had them! I don't think I've seen them sold here but I do live 1/2 a mile or so from a Rita's.

I didn't know what snow balls were until now! I would have just called it a sno cone.

I've had 2 different things called a snowball and I think both are different from what you are talking about. One is called a stuffed snowball and is basically alternating layers of snow cone and soft serve. The other is the New Orleans style snowball made with condensed milk. I think we call what you are talking about a snow cone in VA, which is surprising because it's not far from you.

Snow balls are somewhat similar to snow cones except snow balls are more awesome. I think it's a difference in the thickness of the ice and the kind of syrup used.

Love snow cones! Reminds me of summers spent with my grandma in Philly. She always indulged me. My favorite part was when everything melted and I could drink the mixed flavor leftover syrup.

I grew up calling them snow cones. Here it's called shaved ice, or shave ice for a lot of the locals. They have plain ones with just ice and syrup or there are some with condensed milk or red beans.
