We live in a building that has the front door locked, so I haven't always locked the door if I'm home. I noticed that our eldest can reach the handle now though, so I've started locking it.
Do you lock your door when you're home?

We always keep the door locked out of habit. But, I think locks are fairly useless - if someone wants in, they'll bust in!

Yes, I always lock both unless someone's about to come over or DH is in the yard. I always lock my car the minute I get inside, too. Just habit!

Our front door yes, our patio door, no. Mainly because we're only the second floor and DH is always in and outside when we're at home.

Our door is always locked (you can never just open it from the outside), but recently we've had to double-lock it as well when we're home because DS can (and likes to) open the door. We always lock everything before we go to bed (chain etc).

I tend to always lock them after I come in, almost to a fault... I've locked DH outside in the backyard so many times because I come in before him and do it without thinking
DH doesn't usually lock them. Honestly, we live in a safe neighbourhood, in a safe city, and we have watchful neighbours and a big dog - we really don't have much to worry about. I just do it out of habit.

when we lived in an apartment on the 3rd floor, the handle always locked but we only locked the deadbolt/chain at night. LO didn't know how to open that door.
now that we are in a house I try to keep all the doors locked all the time. we're in a semi-urban area and there is definitely some crime so it's worth being in the habit. the problem is that LO knows how to open most of the doors including the deadbolts now . . . so far she's listened about not doing that unless I am going outside with her but we may have to take extra precautions (we have handles not round knobs which I think makes it easier but I have no idea when she learned the deadbolt!)

Only at night, unless I am going to be upstairs putting my daughter to sleep or in the shower.

Nope.
Actually, I grew up with my parents never locking the doors even when we left. Still to this day I can go to my parents' house when they're not home and easily get in, because at least one (if not all) of their doors will be unlocked.

We have two doors with locks downstairs and we lock the door, deadbolt and chain. I dont take chances.

@sapphire: I agree. But we do lock our doors 100% of the time anyway.

Almost always. The only door I ever leave unlocked is the garage door and all doors are locked at night.

Almost always. We get a lot of solicitors and half our family members would just walk in, so it's pretty much always locked.

Pretty much never during the day, overnight yes!
Even when I walk up or down the block (leaving the house empty) I won't always lock the door!
In the summer I leave the front door open with the screen door open for a nice breeze.
These kind of conversations remind me of that Michael Moore movie when he walks right in so many Canadian's houses. Not sure if it is as common as it used to be, but everyone I knew growing up left their door unlocked!
I did hear a great interview last fall about the psychology of people who go on insane gun-yielding rampages, and that a simple locked door is hugely effective in deterring them from getting in either a building or a room. I think that the idea was that if someone was just ploughing through as many houses/apartments/rooms as they could, taking the time to get through a locked door wouldn't be worth it. I considered starting to lock then, but I have a thing about living in fear, and I would rather give the human race a little more credit. We'll see how far that takes me in life

Yes!
We have been letting a buddy of ours leave his business sign out in front of the house. We live on a major county rd and get a lot of traffic. About 2 weeks ago I had just put our Lo down for a nap. Dh was on the couch and we hear this loud voice yelling into the house "hello, hello" I was like wtf. I go to walk through the kitchen to the front door and find this random women making her way through my house. I was pissed and like "get out of my house, you can't just walk into someones house" She just kept on like nothing was wrong trying to ask me about the sigh out front. We had to explain we were not affiliated with the sign and it's rude to walk into someones home like that.
So buddy had to come get his sign, I wasn't dealing with that again.

Yes, and I set the alarm too. Especially if I am home with LO by myself. We live in a super safe neighborhood, but you never know...

No? I've never heard of this! We always have people coming and going. I lock at night while we are home though. I'm such a sheltered rural Canadian!

Always. We live in an apartment building and have had people try get in several times. I think it was probably an honest mistake, but still.
coconut / 8472 posts
Yes we lock them out of habit when we come in. Plus it makes it easier at night since we don't have to go around making sure every door's locked.

Always! I do out of habit...we live in a good neighborhood, but you can never be too careful. Figure it's a good habit to keep.
Eta: on the topic of locked doors, a few mins ago I heard a drugged deranged man broke down the door to my brothers house, he was saying "shoot me." After my brother called 9-11, the guy ran out where he ran at a neighbor & then a cop before he was subdued and arrested. And this is a nice neighborhood and in broad daylight. That's all I know so far...crazy. Just solidifies my rule of locking the door!

Yes. To be honest I didn't know people left doors open! It freaks me out a little if I realize that I forgot to lock it.
pomegranate / 3355 posts
I do all the time but DH doesn't.. he thinks I am OCD about it! But I tell him the last thing I want is someone to just open it up and stroll on in!

We lock the front door at night, but not during the day. The garage is never locked though, and most of the time the car isn't either.
pomelo / 5720 posts
I didn't used to but now that DS can open the door on his own, I do. It's for his safety, not because I feel like we need to otherwise.

We live in a building with 2 security doors downstairs. Our apartment door is automatically locked when closed, but at night, we turn the deadbolt.
