I haven't bought jarred sauce in years! We always make our own sauce. I usually make a double batch then freeze half for the next time.

I love homemade sauce! It depends on what I'm making. If DH makes spaghetti, he starts out with Ragu and doctors it up. It's an easy meal for us. But if i'm making fettuccini or anything like that, it's going to be from scratch! I do keep a bottle of TJ's vodka sauce in the cupboard for emergencies. It's delish!

I've been trying to lately so I know what's in it. Would love to try your recipe if you'd like to share!

i used to, but ever since LO came along, life is just too busy sometimes, so jarred sauce it is, with some additions to make it "mines".

This is the sauce I make. So easy and yummy! http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2010/01/tomato-sauce-with-butter-and-onions/

Yep, we even canned tomatoes this year for sauce purposes. It's cheaper and I find it fresher tasting to make my own sauce

Usually, we make huge batches after we harvest our garden to use up our tomatoes, and we have enough to last most of the year.

Yup, we have a recipe that one of my husband's co-worker's grandmother gave us. It's a old Italian family recipe. We add to it and alter to our taste. LOVE it. We always make a big batch then use leftovers for next time or sauce for pizza.
I really should try canning it!

As an Italian girl, I'd be severely deficient if I didn't make my own!

I make my own sauce but then usually add half a jar of bottled spagetti sauce to get it to the consistency I like.

I make a huge pot and freeze it in individual (meal) servings.

I was buying premade sauce - then we found a HUGE bushel of tomatoes for only $10 and a bushel of g peppers for $4 so we made about 15 jars of sauce it's delish.

I've never tried making my own sauce! I think I will though

I've tried it once and loved it. However, I don't have much time to make it anymore. I'd love to again in the future, and make a massive batch to freeze for future use.

I make my own too! Such a simple recipe. Ill post tomorrow! I make it on the stove (simmer for an hour) or in the crockpot, sometimes with meatballs

Yes. I make large batches of vodka sauce, marinara, and pizza sauce. I usually freeze 4-5 servings and use one fresh.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
I don't really like marinara sauce, but whenever I eat it I make it from scratch.

I've only attempted making an Alfredo from scratch!
I'm zero % Italian, so I'm no sauce expert or frequent eater of it lol

Yes I only make homemade sauce...can't even remember the last time I bought a jar.

@Boogs: It's hard because I just throw stuff in, but I can try!
I blanch tomatoes and peel their skins off (I leave the seeds because they contain a lot of the flavor). Then I brown some onions and mix the onions and tomatoes until they cook down for a while. During the cook down, I add a generous helping of red wine, I add a couple of cloves of garlic, several shakes of oregano and a lot of sweet basil. I also add some fresh grated Parmesan. I sample the sauce and add enough sugar to balance out the acid. Once I hit all the right notes, I add a few shakes of crushed red peppers. I then simmer the whole concoction for a couple hours on very low heat until it thickens well. If I'm doing a meat sauce, I add meatballs and sweet italian sausage very early in the process. It turns into a really nice gravy!

I make my own sauce, but i'm not sure if it's the same kind of sauce you get in the jars (since I've never tried any). All I do is put a couple of cans of diced tomatoes on the meat and add spices and herbs...

@winniebee: That's all I do
Sometimes have a few jars of Classico or Newman's in the cupboard, but it takes about the same time for me to heat up some sauce as it does to make it from scratch.
Tastes better too.

I can sauce on Labor Day every year. It's so much yummier than store bought and I like that I can control the ingredients and source them myself. It's an all day event, but now that DH is into it it's really fun.

I am italian as well, and never ever eat jarred sauce. Making a sauce is so easy. Here's a basic, no fail recipe.
1 medium onion diced
4 cloves of garlic, sliced or minced (or more!)
2 cans San Marzano tomatoes (this is key - San Marzano are the best canned tomatoes. Personally I like the whole peeled tomoatoes because I like a chunky sauce, otherwise you can do crushed tomoatoes - or one of each)
Fresh basil
Saute the onions in olive oil until they soften a bit, add the garlic and cook a couple more minutes. Add your tomatoes, some salt, pepper and oregeno if you so desire and let it simmer. Add fresh basil near the end of cooking. Typically, this is ready after about 30 minutes of cooking but I if I have the time, I let it simmer for much longer.
I usually will buy a big bunch of basil, make a double or triple sauce to freeze, and then make pesto to freeze with the rest of the basil. If you like a thicker sauce, you can add some tomato paste. Usually though I can get my sauce to thicken up no problem as the san marzano tomatoes are thicker in general.

Always make my own. We never had jarred sauce growing up so it's just what I thought everyone did. I remember coming home from a friend's house and running in to tell my mom that her mom just dumped out a jar and there was her sauce! Haha, now obviously I get that not everyone has a family sauce recipe.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
I used to make it..... but since LO there's just no time. We're not Italian so we're not picky sauce eaters anyway. If I was going to buy store bought matzo ball soup.... that would be another story.
pomegranate / 3244 posts
In my fantasy world where I have tons of extra time on my hands yes, I would make it. These days I just dress up the store-bought stuff. Can't do the store bought stuff plain, I always must add something.
@aprk: My bff SWEARS by this sauce, I have yet to try it though. Maybe this weekend!

We make our own sauce; it really doesn’t take that much time; and your whole house smells so good! We usually make a big, big batch of red sauce at the end of summer when tomatoes are really cheap in bulk at the farmers market. We make both regular red sauce and Arabbiata sauce. We also make big batches of pesto sauce every few months, which is super easy to make and is great for pasta, eggs, fish, veggies, etc.
We don’t eat alfredo sauce often since it has about 10 billion calories in it; but when we do its always from scratch. It seriously takes about 5 minutes to make, it nearly fool-proof and jarred alfredo always tastes super salty and fake-cheesey to me.

@yoursilverlining: I make a great carbonarra too. I was thinking about sharing that recipe as a blog post!

@Mrs. Jacks: oh please do! I love carbonarra; totally forgot about the one!

Yes! Once I did it the first time I never went back to store bought!

My mom makes her own sauce, but hasn't taught me yet. We love Trader Joe's Arribiata sauce. I prefer baking to cooking, so if I have the time, I'd rather make fresh bread and eat the jarred sauce
