M will be 6 months in December. While we live in the south, it does get cold. Should I have a jacket for her or just bundle her in a blanket? Do they make jackets for babies?
Don't hurt me for being a naive new mom. 
Eta: We don't walk a lot. It's house to car to wherever we're going so I don't think we need one of those stroller snuggy things.

I had a jacket for DD at 6 months during the winter. It was from baby Gap size 6-12 months.

I'm planning to get a car seat cover since they don't recommend bulky clothing while the baby is in the car seat (and we live in WI, where it gets super cold in the winter). So I'll probably do a sweater, but no coat, then bundle her up over the seatbelt.

I think I'm going to buy a one piece like this rather than a jacket. But my baby isn't due until late Nov so he/she will be tinier than M will be.

Liv was 5-6 months last december/january. I had a North Face puffy coat for her and she wore it like twice - both times it snowed here and we went on the sled. Other than that, she had a baby gap pea coat and 2 zip up fleece jackets (north face and patagonia) and wore those a ton. If you are house to car, I think youd be fine with a light jacket or a fleece and some blankets

I think in the South you will be fine with a fleece hoodie and a thicker blanket going from car to door. My BIL lives in GA and that's all he ever had for his kids.

My LO didn't have a jacket for the winter months. We used a car seat cover and layered him in blankets.

I agree with @MamaMoose, get a one piece bundler for when you're not using the car seat and a thin zip up fleece for when you are. It's more than enough.
I made the puffy coat mistake, lol. My son looked ridiculous in it and it was too puffy, especially in the arms.

We have just bought fleeces for DD and we use blankets over that. I might get her some tiny mittens though. Oh and she has two warm snowsuits.

@MamaMoose: I had that one but didn't use it too much. I had DD in this thinner one so it also worked in the car seat. You might want to consider it, too.

I bought a puffy jacket 1.5 sizes too big for LO last winter (she was around 8 months old). Used it a handful of times and it kept her nice and warm when we stepped out.
She'll be able to wear it again this winter. and possibly next too! (maybe not next).

We had a little fleece jacket for DS. We used it in the fall before winter hit. (we are in NY). It wasn't too heavy, but gave an extra layer.

@Andrea: I like that one too. I'm looking for something that will work when my husband needs to carry my son from the car into daycare. How warm would you say it is? We live in Chicago so I'm worried this might not be enough once the real winter hits (if we have a real winter this year!).

@dookie32: we live in NY and it was freezing that year. Going to and from daycare to the car is why we had it. It worked really well.

I would recommend getting a soft one that's not too bulky so you can easily get her in and out of her car seat. I bought my son a Columbia fleece jacket for his first year and we live in the Washington, DC area. Gets really cold here in the winter and snows a few days out of the year. We almost never really were outside much during the winter months so it was a good jacket. I also had a fleece blanket going between the car and indoors.

I'm in Florida and we had a jacket for LO. Usually if we're going in the car and going to be outside for a short amount of time I'd just bundle a blanket on top of her, but we like to take walks in the winter so I like to put a jacket and blanket on her then. She's likely to kick the blanket off and she can't do that to a jacket.

Last winter, LO was 4-7months (Dec-Mar) and she never had a winter coat (and we live in Canada!). We used the JJ Cole Bundle Me carseat cover and it was so toasty warm in there! I highly recommend it.

I think Sawyer will be out of his infant seat by winter (and into a convertible), we are going to buy a fleece one-piece suit from Mountain Equiptment Co-op (http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Kids/InfantClothing/PRD~5016-361/mec-ursus-bunting-suit-2-infants.jsp) for in the carseat since it is thin but warm, and probably some kind of coat or bigger snowsuit for in the stroller or to and from the car.
