I was talking with a few friends, and one of them said she is having a contractor come over to fix a leak in her bathroom. He is going to be working at her house all day, and she was asking if she should offer to buy him lunch. I've had contractors work for me in the past, and I have offered them a beverage, but it never crossed my mind to buy them lunch. In my experience, they usually pack a lunch or take a lunch break. But the other friends said in her situation, they would offer to buy lunch, usually a pizza or a sub from a sandwich shop. If you have a contractor working at your house all day, do you offer to buy them lunch?

I only do so for people working multiple days. We had a crew of painters for about 3 weeks last year, and we bought them lunch maybe 5 or 6 times.
But if it's just one day, I probably would offer cookies or lemonade or coffee, but not lunch.

noooo....is this a thing? What if you were doing a reno that went on for 6 months? Lunch every day? That seems insane to me.

I offer bottled water if we have it in the house; otherwise I offer nothing.
My mom, on the other hand has cooked meals for contractors. They always happily accept.

We have a 3 week painting and repair job at our house. I bought them lunch 1x a week

Depends. A plumber, electrician, alarm tech., etc. who owns their own business....no, not usually. I'll offer beverages (water/coffee), and if my kids were having something like home baked cookies/muffins, I'd offer one.
When we have a crew of people like painters/movers in for a few days, I generally buy lunch (pizza/subs).

No, just beverages. I used to try offering lunch and contractors looked at me like I have three heads.

@aprild: I do offer water. And I think we brought beers over to the guys who built our house once on a Friday afternoon (cause I know they always had beers in the late day...ha!)

I won't again. I bought lunch for the guys doing our cabinets (just some chicken biscuits) and they complained that they were breakfast food, not lunch. I said, "Okay, I'll take them to the neighbors" and they found a way to enjoy them.... (never hiring these people again for various reasons, this just one of them....)

When we had a crew at our house for 3 months renovating our house, DH would offer lunch if he was there around lunch time but they never took him up on the offer so we just stuck to beverages.

@mediagirl: That would be my worry if I were to offer to buy lunch. Some people are picky, or maybe someone has allergies, so I wouldn't know what to buy them. And I would be offended if I did buy something, and then they complained!

I voted other - we don't always do it, but definitely have in the past.
For instance, we had our kitchen cabinets refaced a while ago with new counters installed, and the same crew of 2-3 people were there for 4 days - on the 4th day, DH and I were ordering pizza for dinner, and they were wrapping up the project, so we ordered an extra pizza and wings and invited them to eat with us.

If I was going out, I would maybe offer, hey can I grab you anything while I'm out.

I have for contractors that were working at my house for a week.

I would say most circumstances no! We did once when a father and son were doing our kitchen ceilings. They were so nice and kind of came at the last minute for us so we did!
