My husband travels to California (from Maryland) a week a month every month. It was difficult at first, but like most things you slip into a routine and it becomes second nature. We've talked about dropping to every other month once DS is born though. I think I will need the extra help at first. Eventually, I think I will adjust to doing it on my own though.

Yes, he's a train engineer and gone all the time. He's also on call 24 hours 7 days a week, so he could get called for a train at 2am or 5pm. When he's called he's normally going out of town and gone for 2.5 days. It is so hard to plan anything, I'm glad he's been working steady (laid off Nov. '11 - Oct. '12) but it's such an adjustment, sometimes I feel like a single Mom, especially when all four kids are at the house!

DH usually travels Mon-Thur every week. He has been home the last 4 or 5 months, and it has been so nice. I think once baby is here and his paternity leave is over, he is going to end up on a project where he will be gone. Going to be a huge adjustment to him being gone again, especially with me being a solo parent.
You do get in a routine and like @rahlyrah said, it becomes second nature. The plus is you don't have to cook during the week if you don't want too!
