My DS's school sells soy candles at the holidays and they are terrible so this year I asked the teacher what they would like donated and I purchsed it. They also sell flower bulbs during the spring and sometimes I buy those. We attend the school fair and usually make a donation since I don't have time to volunteer.

I know daycare costs are already expensive, but would raising the tuition really be that much of a hardship? I'd hate for the daycare to come up short on their fundraising goals and the result is my child attending an ill-equipped daycare. I'd rather stroke a check than hit up people for money though.

@regberadaisy: right? They are apart of a Catholic Church and elementary school so maybe that has more to do with it?

They really annoy me and I ignore a lot of them. The PTO sold coupon books and I did buy one. Sometimes they will have a deal with a local business, where if you go on a certain night, the business donates 20%. If it's convenient, I'll go, but I won't make a huge effort. I don't mind funding the PTOs efforts as much because they sponsor date nights where food is supplied, pizza days, special events, etc.

I wish they didn't do it at all though. It's the most expensive daycare/preschool in the area.

Ours has a chili cook off every year that is a big fundraiser and the older kids also put on a little show. I am obligated to participate because I am "room mom" - which reminds me that I have to make a sign up sheet!

@ladybee: I'm sure that is the main part of it. My guess is that tuition doesn't cover their operating costs. Ours doesn't.

They did many, but in cute fun ways. Like they did art projects and then you could order their art on stickers, mugs, etc. they also did scholastic books, it was stuff like that. And no pressure to participate

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Considering that I already pay more than my mortgage for a month in daycare, a tuition hike would be a hardship.

OP: my daycare is for-profit, so they don't do fundraising.

Our daycare is for profit and the fundraisers they do are for charity. I don't participate because I find them obnoxious. There is literally some type of fundraiser every single month. If once or twice a year they did some sort of child or education related charity I would contribute. But the frequency and never ending-ness just bugs.

Our daycare hasn't had any fundraiser a for themselves, although at Christmas they had a food drive for the local food pantry and I forgot to bring stuff and felt like a jerk.

To assuage my guilt, I participated when our local grocery store had lists for needy people and I took a list a bought the groceries on it--but I still wonder if LOs teachers think I'm the tightwad who can't spare a couple boxes of mashed potatoes.
