I want movers but DH says he can do it with his brothers and dad. We are only moving a few miles but I am pregnant and won't be able to lift a lot.

Usually it's just me and DH, and maybe a friend. Last time we moved I was 6 months pregnant, though. MIL/FIL came and helped us.

We've never paid anyone. We had to use movers when we got stationed overseas and it was weird since they had to pack everything themselves for legal reasons. I pre-packed a box of all my "un-mentionables" and told them what was in it. lol

We get friends and family to help! We moved our entire house in 2.5 hours!

@MrsBrewer: Dang! I hope our move is like that!

We are having this same discussion right now. I will be almost 35 weeks when we move, so I want to make it less stressful for DH has I can. My family is going to help, but I want to get movers for the furniture at least. Then have family and friends help with the boxes. He thinks we should save the money and do it ourselves. He said we can take that $500 and buy a new tv for our bedroom instead.

I agree with @yoursilverlining: movers are worth every penny. I used to move using friends, brothers and cousins but once hubs and I started moving together we hired a company and it is sooooo much easier. They wrap everything, bring wardrobe boxes and the big truck so you only need to take one big trip. There is still plenty to do with unpacking so take the heavy lifting off your plate.

We have never paid movers before. we usually move ourselves gradually. but this time DH wants to get movers so that I can be more relaxed. But I dont like people helping me me move

We get friends and family to help, it saves a lot of money!

Our last two moves = movers the first time (we were out of state, 4 hours away) and on our own the second time. The second time we hired some guys under the table to put things in the moving truck but even then I had to do more work than I wanted. So this upcoming move is movers all the way!

@zippylef: @autumnlove: Yea it was awesome we moved from a 1200 sq ft townhouse on the 2nd floor to a regular 1300 sq ft house. We ended up having like 10-15 people come and help us! We just rented the biggest truck we could get (20' ft truck I think? Maybe bigger) But we just made a huge assembly line with boxes and furniture

We had my brothers help but it was so hard with a baby, so I think next time we'll either look into hiring movers or get 5-10 people to help... not three

Our last move we were flat broke, carrying two mortgages so it was DIY all the way! We plan on staying in that house long term, but if things change and we move before that we will be hiring someone for sure!

We've never used movers. I'm way too much of a control freak. Our next move (a few years away) will be cross country... With a kid. So I think we'll HAVE to get movers even though I won't like it.

Usually we enlist family and friends, but never again. I'll pay whatever it costs.

We moved across the country without movers. Three years later, we moved again and hired movers. It was so much nicer having movers! We moved across town last spring when I was in my first tri. We hired movers for the furniture and I brought everything else over in bits and pieces. We'll probably move again in the next five years for a better school district, and I'm pretty sure we'll hire movers. We're getting too old to do it ourselves!

I packed 95% of the boxes myself and moved them a few at a time. We overlapped the closing on our home and when our lease expired by 2 weeks. Then my DH and his brother moved the heavy furniture. We rented a UHaul for a day.

DH moved from his apt to our house and we did it ourselves with the help of my brother. I've never really moved since I went straight from my parents house to our house and didn't move a lot. We're hopefully in our forever house, but if we every have to move, we're hiring people.

I've almost always hired movers. It ends up costing so much in gas and a truck rental to get everything from one place to the next.

We rent a Uhaul then have friends and family help us move. We thank them by buying them a nice meal!

When we moved from our individual apartments to our current one together, we had movers for the big stuff-- couches, bed, large bookshelves, and moved the smaller stuff ourselves because DH wanted to save money (we paid the movers by the hour). I still say that was dumb and we should have paid a little extra for them to move everything at once, but SOME of us weren't all the way packed up yet. When we move again, we'll hire movers and be more organized, since it will be from one place to one place. Plus, i'll probably be pretty pregnant. At this point, we are too old to be asking our friends to help us move, and most of the family isn't in the area.

I've done it both ways, and for the rest of my life (barring some financial catastrophe), I will be hiring movers. They're fast and they can fit furniture down hallways when I think it's impossible. One huge vote for movers.

When we moved into our house we had movers and it was definitely worth it! Not cheap but worth the expense. Good luck, I hate moving.

Last time we moved we just had friends help out but next time we are hiring movers. DH & i both have bad backs so it's not even an option to do it ourselves anymore.

We moved this past fall and used movers for the first time. OMG, best $250 we've ever spent!!! We only moved a mile away and had everything boxed up so it didn't take very long.

Pizza and beer used to be the reward for friends who helped, but that no longer entices people in my age range! My mom has helped us me move so many times, and she works so hard when she does. The last two times, we paid someone, and it was worth every penny. You don't feel guilty watching someone haul all of your stuff around when you know it is their job! We went with someone off of Craigslist--a cheaper option than the big company names.

We just moved (10 hours) last month and did it ourselves; unless you're a masochist, I'd recommend movers. Moving with babies/toddlers (or while pregnant) is very challenging.

Every time we have moved we did it ourselves except for the last time. I was 6 months and had the three boys to watch. We hired movers to pack the truck, we drove it the the few miles we were moving an then they unloaded it. It was th best money I v spent. It only took a few hours for them to load and unload our three bedroom house. it would have taken us all day

Hire movers! For a local move, you can usually do all the packing yourself and get something like "Two men and a truck" who will literally load it up and unload it. They will typically put stuff where you want it. I have found that to be a hassle and generally just try to get furniture in the right rooms and have them stack all the boxes in one room.
This is partially due to when I pack myself, I don't necessarily keep the box specific to one room.
I've also moved cross country three times and had a full professional move each time, where my items were all professionally boxed and then moved.
I will never DIY. I gave that up after I got a real job (post-college).

I have done short distance move without help and an across town move with movers and it was so nice having someone responsible for getting our heavy items into place... Especially since some of it was going up two and a half flights of stairs!
