Traditional, but I agree that there are some names that have multiple "traditional" spellings in different languages-- so like Lukas from the original list, that'd be similar to Karl/Carl, Jacob/Jakob, etc and I wouldn't consider those unique spellings

I like traditional spellings of traditional names but think unique names can be cute.

My problem with unique spellings is pronunciation. I feel like a name should be easily pronounced from its spelling (names from different cultures are exceptions). Also, random "y"s just irk me. Use a real vowel!

I love unusual names but not unusual spellings.

@nana87: I agree. I live in Central Europe, so there are a ton of names where C is swapped for a K or there's an F instead of PH (Sofia/Sophia, Josef/Joseph) or Ys and Js are used where they wouldn't be elsewhere (Anja/Anya). But in typical North American culture, I prefer standard spellings.

I prefer traditional spellings with a few exceptions. If it's a family name or a cultural spelling, I enjoy those. Maksim is one of my favorite names as it's the Russian variation of Maximilian. Same with Mae being the French variation of May.

@mrs.shinerbock: Thank you. I hate that people lump Lukas in with "creative spellings" since that is our son's name and we spelled it that way because I am Swedish. That is the traditional spelling. We weren't trying to be unique and I always feel a bit judged on here for that since this discussion comes up regularly.
