I rarely do but I think I will from now on. Helps balance out the hype and discourages buying!

Sometimes. If the reviews are all good and perfect, I think they were paid reviews. The lower ones usually show flaws with the product.

Always. I find them much more helpful that the positive reviews. Especially as I seem to find so many lately that received a free/discounted product in exchange for a review. I just don't trust it.

Usually just to see. Sometimes people put low reviews for ridiculous reasons haha.

I always do. Sometimes I find another product and sometimes it doesn't make a difference.

I read the top/most helpful reviews then just work back chronologically to see what the vibe seems to be from recent purchasers

I didn't used to but I do now because so many vendors have found ways to get fake positive reviews. If there's lots of verified purchases that give 1 or 2 stars then Im not going to risk it.

I usually read the top reviews, and then look at the percentage of 5 star, 4 star, 3 star, etc. I like to see the bulk of reviews being five and four, with smaller amounts going down to threes and twos. What I don't like seeing is a lot of fives and a lot of ones, which sometimes happens. If I see that then I try to read a variety of reviews and see what the flaws are.

A friend posted about a great product she had bought for her child and was using it for the first time. Of course it was picture perfect but super expensive. Anyway, she raved so much that I had to remember again why I had decided against it long ago. (Please don't put me in front of an infomercial for more than 15 minutes. I will start out hating it then fall in love.) Anyway, I went into Amazon and checked out the one star reviews and said, Oh yah! That's why I didn't want it. I feel much better about my choice not to buy!

I definitely do, sometimes I feel like they helped me dodge a bullet and then other times people complain about the stupidest stuff ever or give it one star because UPS lost their package- that has nothing to do with the product! Unrelated but I also love reading bad reviews of recipes, I love people who say it's awful since it didn't turn out and that they omitted the banking powder and substituted honey for sugar and they baked at high altitude... I genuinely wonder how these people survive life!

I do. It seems like people have very specific complaints when they give a low rating, and I like to see why. I also do this for hotels.
pomelo / 5257 posts
Yeah, same for travel and restaurants and then I end up not wanting to buy anything or go anywhere haha.

@Cole: ok yes to the stupid reviews -- I once saw someone give a restaurant one star because the valet wouldn't let her park her "brand new Mercedes" in the valet lot herself. If you need to park your own car, do it somewhere else lady! Now tell me about the food...

Yes, I also use fakespot.com to see if the majority are fake reviews, esp if it's not a reputable brand.

Yes- with a grain of salt though. I keep in mind purchased reviews vs. whiny entitled first world problems. I also like to check positive vs. negative, also how the product holds up: did they get it yesterday and are raving about it, how is the product several months later?

If it's something over a certain $ amount or something totally new I'm buying, then definitely.
But I buy so much other random stuff on there - diapers, crayons, etc that I don't want or need to read reviews for.

I do a lot of online shopping due to where I live and not much is here for stores. So I am big on reviews. I want the good and bad and always look at both.
persimmon / 1367 posts
Definitely, but I like to read as many reviews as possible, both good and bad, before I purchase.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Yup! It gives me a better idea of all the pros and cons of the item or gives me a heads up about potential faults and defects. They generally provide a fix for it too if it's easy or tell you it's not worth it.

I read a little of both, sometimes I roll my eyes like "this did not fit right." For example, I just bought some sofa covers and almost ALL of the negative reviews were because they had T style cushions and this cover was for boxed...buyer error but for some reason it was the product's fault! it even said "only for boxed cushions, use this model for T style"
