When I was living in CA, recycling was fun because I got some money whenever I did.
They don't pay you for recycling in GA. But I still recycle.
Do you?

Definitely! In general, I try to minimize the amount of trash I generate too. Although now that I think about it, I kind of suck at that one.

yes i am fanatic about it. my parents used to own a recycling center.

The township (or burrough) we live in provides blue trash cans for recycle pick up every other week. I use to be bad at it, but then I made it a game to compete with my neighbor. They always have a full bin PLUS three to four of their own bins filled with plastic, glass, paper, etc.
So now I am a fiend about everything going out. FH threw out a bleach bottle the other day and I was like NOOO!
It's the Capricorn in me. >_>

@mrbee: my grandma used to say she wished she could make as much money as she could trash (sounds better in korean). HAHA.

Yes, we recycle everything. It used to be a pain because my hubby would have to take it somewhere when we lived in our townhouse, but since we moved into a house we just take it to the driveway. Easy peasy!

@chopsuey119: I have to make everything a competition. I work my best when I think I'm going to beat someone else at it. lol Strange, I know.
I do it when I do the dishes! I put my stop watch on the counter and I'm like get them done in 10 minutes or less! There are no prizes! I don't know why I'm like that.

I want to but they charge a lot here to recycle, so we don't. Since we have a house now and I'm hoping to have my own garden soon I'm planning on making a compost bin. I hope that reduces our waste some.

@tana_bk: You get CHARGED to recycle!? That is the first time I've ever heard of that!
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
Yes, we definitely recycle! Our bin fills up so fast...can't imagine just throwing it out!

We have to recycle and separate all trash. Tokyo is super strict about it. We also have to pay extra to throw away any oversized trash.
pear / 1639 posts
No we don't. We have been talking about getting a can crusher and recycling cans though. Its not something that is really pushed here, or easy to do!

Recycling here is free and we totally use it. Two huge bins out in the garage.
grapefruit / 4056 posts
We do. We pay $15 per month for curbside recycling collection, and it is totally worth it. We usually only fill our garbage bin about once per month, and we fill 2 bins of recycling per week.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Yeah, we would get fined if we didn't. We keep a trashcan in the pantry for recyclables. When that is full, we dump it in our recycle bin which is a smaller version of our rolling trash can. I love that they make it easy for us.
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
Yes, the town picks up our recyclables once a week.
pear / 1861 posts
No, probably should since they pick it up the day before they pick up trash. I cloth diaper & use reusable grocery bags so it evens out. LOL

yes, i recycle. sometimes, i'm lazy and throw the pile of paper in the garbage, but for the most parts, i do. especially since they charge deposits on cans, i try to get those back. but sometimes, i recycle the cans without getting paid because it accumulates and hubby's like "i'll pay you $5 to just throw them out"... and i feel too lazy to get it so i just toss them. well, put them on the recycle side of the garbage area.

Me too! Fanatical. I just feel good that I'm doing my little part in some way!

We recycle. We have a blue bin provided by the city that we put all recycleable materials into. We also separate out our bottles (wine, beer and water) because we can redeem them for $. We have big plastic bins we keep the bottles in, save them up and 2 or 3 times a year go and redeem them. We also recycle all cardboard, but we have to take that to the city recycling center, they won’t pick up big boxes and stuff from curbside.

There was a couple who paid for their wedding with recycled cans. Pretty neat.

I like recycling because my nerdy side enjoys the element of sorting. I like to sort.

I do and always have, trying to get my DH to do it more often. He grew up in an area where they JUST got city provided recycling bins so it is not something he is used to.
The city we live in now picks up recycling and "green waste" once a week and regular garbage every 2 weeks. You are only allowed to put out one garbage bag every 2 weeks unless you have a special tag on it (that you have to purchase from the city) and then they will take upto 3 at a time. They charge $3 per tag so it adds up for sure.
eggplant / 11824 posts
@mrswin: 1 bag of garbage every 2 weeks, wow thats strict!!
We can put out as many trash bags as we like, but they will only take bags that are the city-approved (and city sold) trash bags, which cost $1.75/each and are very small.
nectarine / 2433 posts
@yoursilverlining yep one large black bag!
Its actually not too bad once you get used to it because you can put out as much recycling and green bag waste as you want and soooooo much can go into thoes two bins/bags. When we have a party or something then sometimes we have to buy a tag but its not very often we have more than one bag

We do-- we have three garden trash cans in the backyard for glass, plastic, and cans. Any other recyclables we put into the recycling can that gets picked up once a week with our trash. We hit up the recycling center maybe once every 2 months and get back about $100.
In CA you already "pay" for the recycled goods you buy and when you bring them in, you're just getting your refund back... plus we're house poor, so money is money.
pear / 1965 posts
Where we live we have to pay to have it picked up, but we have a reclcling center on the Military base we work on, so we just bring it it!

We have a blue can for recycling that the garbage company picks up. My mom loooves recycling cans and bottles we when we have them she takes them to make some cash for all her grandkids piggy banks.
