OMG that's crazy- over $13?

I have a hard time reminding people when they owe me money. Only if it's a big sum (like we ordered the concert tickets for everyone and they owe us for their tickets) will I send a gentle reminder if it's forgotten.

Yes but only if it is a big amount. I wouldn't worry about $13.

We usually pay for our friends'/family's meals without expecting them to pay us back.
I can't believe your fil is going crazy over 13 bucks. Are they struggling financially? I would have dh text back and say "mom borrowed 50 way back when and never paid me back. Lets call it even."

Wow. That's nuts! I usually don't remind people unless its more than $100 probably. I would in that situation though since he is being so ridiculous. I would mention the fact they owe me $50 (but not accept repayment) and pay him his $13 dollars and never borrow money or lend money to them again.

I would forgive the $50, and pay back the $13 right away...

However.... given the case that he really needs the $13, and his wife had to borrow $50, maybe they are really low on money, and o them that $13 is a lot? (But if that was the case, they shouldn't go out for lunch!)

We don't remind people that owe us money unless it's a large amount and their promised return date is way past due.

Between friends and family, we all alternate paying for meals and stuff. We don't keep track of who's turn it is or who has paid more over time, we just go with it. It'll even itself out in the future (e.g. presents, celebration meals, etc).

I can't believe his own dad is chasing after him and it's for only $13!! Ridiculous. I agree with texting him and saying "mom borrowed $50 from me so take it out of that.".

I don't lend money because it always gets weird. My policy is to either just give someone the money/treat them to a meal if it's an amount I can live with not seeing again, but never lend money or things because I know they will never come back. Maybe that's selfish.

@MrsTiz: Eh????? For the record, I find his behaviour really, really weird. My mum is really short on money but she would totally buy me lunch and refuse the money when I tried to give it back. Perhaps your MIL handles all their household money and pays him a tiny allowance (so she can spend the rest on Christmas ornaments and shirts!) so this $13 is really important to him?!?! Bizzare.

@MrsTiz: that's super weird. And why us he coming to get if from you when you have nothing to do with it???? I'm sorry he's being a PITA. I'd just pay him and then avoid him so as to avoid the crazy train.

That sounds over the top for me. I don't lend out money, I just give it to them. If I buy someone lunch, I don't expect the money back.
