We are currently renting a little house that a family member owns while we save up to buy a house. We plan to start looking at the end of this school year (but probably not buy until fall when housing prices dip a bit.)

We bought our first home almost 4 years ago. We are slowly renovating it, and hope to move out to the country in 5 or so years.

We own. We bought it in 2013 and are updating along the way.

I like renting right now. New building, large townhouse, near downtown, comes with no worries.

Own, but we are going to sell next spring and then move to a new city and rent!

I voted own, but have a mortgage. I won't consider myself owning until we've paid it off, truthfully.

Both. We own a house in our hometown that we rent out, and we are renting in our current area as we are here for such a short time. Once our house back home sells, I will not buy again until I am out of the Navy.

We own our condo. Bought it not quite two years ago under unusual circumstances (we were renting it and the owner offered to sell it at a good price, or we'd have to move). Now we pretty much cannot move out before April or it will cost a LOT in taxes.
Probably will move out to the suburbs next summer and try to own this and rent it out. Will try to rent a house in the suburbs before deciding exactly where to buy.

We have owned our home for almost four years and are slowly updating as we can. I think we'll be here for another 3 or so years (or until baby #2 comes along) before we sell.

Rent, but we are expats with no intent to buy where we currently live.

We bought our current home last spring. We rented for a year and a half between when we sold our one-bedroom condo and figured out where we were going to settle down and buy a house.

We own. Just bought a new house last year. Sold our old house at a profit of about $30K in three years, so for now homeownership it working out for us.

We rent because we are new to the area (relocated from another state last year). At this point, we are not sure if we will be relocating again for my husbands job next year, so we will continue to rent and save up for our down payment.

Own. I was lucky enough to be able to buy a small place in 2009 at the bottom of the market. That helped DH and I tremendously when we went to get something bigger this past year.

@looch: I was going to say something along these lines.
If by own you mean have a giant mortgage and never ending repairs on a 100 year old house, yes we own.

Rent - my husband's job has him moving a lot right now so we're saving up to buy when we will be somewhere for more than a few years.

rent. barely anyone owns in NYC and I'm a grad student so we aren't here for the long haul anyway

We own--bought our first house in 2008, and then moved across the country and bought in our new city (but sold the first one).
If we move, we will likely hold on to our current house because getting out of the Toronto housing market makes it hard to get back in, and it would be easy to rent it out to cover our costs and then some.

We own a condo that we're selling. We bought a house in the burbs. If all goes well, we'll be moving in a few weeks.

We bought our first home last May We rented the 10 years before that!

Renting, though we are on the verge of buying our very first home! Should complete in the next couple of months if all goes well

Own; we both lived at home before we got married and with our parents help we were able to buy a house.

We rent. But we also live in the SF Bay Area where housing prices are skyrocketing again.

Rent. Wouldn't be able to afford to buy anything worthwhile in the city and don't want to move away.

Owned our home for 6.5 years and still loving it (and the neighborhood) more every day.

We rent. We don't really want to stay in the m city that we are currently living in so it doesn't make sense for us to buy. We are hoping to move to back to our college town soon.

We rent. My husband is in the military so we move too much to own right now.

We own and have been in our house for 5.5 years. We rented in the city before that.

Rent. We've been renting in various cities for 10+ years, most recently NYC for 8. We love it. We love the flexibility it affords us and we have had terrific luck with our rentals. We live in waaaaay more house than we would need/want to spend on a comparable purchased house in this area. In today's market, we don't view it as a sound financial investment for us. Also, DH and I grew up moving every 2-3 years so we both like not being tied to a house.

@Thrifty Mama: We are in the same position. We are looking forward to buying in a few years, hopefully.

Rent. Dh's parents bought it and we rent off them. House prices are crazy here so we won't be looking to buy for many years yet. This current house still needs quite a bit done to it so I'm glad we have dh's parents as landlords to pay for it.
