@MaryM: I almost did the very same thing (and wish I had.) I was house hunting when I met my husband, but he asked that I hold off when things got serious...and housing prices have gone up 30% since then...

@simplyfelicity: DH and I had been dating a few years, but weren't serious yet. He thought it was so odd I kept asking what he thought of things. Little did he know he'd end up living there three years later!

Own. Didn't buy until we were 33. It's really expensive to buy here.

I bought my first home at 22. Current home is 3rd house I've owned, first with DH. I still own an additional property besides our primary residence.

Just bought our first home at the very end of July, after a lifetime of renting! Eek!

Own. We finally bought our first house last year after lots of big international moves all around the world.....it's nice to be settled down now!

Own in the suburbs, but sometimes I'd rather rent and live in the middle of the city. It would be nice to be able to call a landlord about problems too

We own our home. We bought our first house in 2012, then sold it earlier this year & bought another.

@lamariniere: my sister studied abroad in your current city and her host family had rented the same place for 20+ years! i thought it was so weird, but she said it was pretty common. they owned a country home that they were renovating though.

Before we got married, DH had lived in the same rented house for 12 years. But it was rented from the owners and they'd never raised the rent so it was more affordable than most apartments (and was a 3 BR single family home). He tried to convince me we should live there instead of the townhouse I owned, but renting no longer made sense to me. It was kind of a dump though. Rust orange shag carpets. Need I say more?

We rent. In Portland, the housing market is skyrocketing. We're saving agressively, and hoping to buy a home within the next two years. Until then, I pray we can stay in our current home ... we love it!

We rent. I'd love to own and hope to by the time we have our next baby.

We saved the first 3 years of our marriage (hard as heck inDMV), and are building our first home. All they have left is the hardwoods, and the rest of the appliances. T-minus 30 days until closing !

We rent, but that's because we are in the military and moved every 2-3 years.

@birdofafeather: I'm not surprised. It is extremely common for landlords to offer a 10 year lease here! We currently have a 5 year lease, but no penalties if we stay at least 3 years. Buying is extremely expensive, especially if you want to live more centrally.
