I almost never do. I guess that's not hard since we generate so many dishes and we have a small washing machine, so we often do 2 loads a day (dishwasher and washing machine).
Do you do small loads?

Never the dishwasher! Sometimes the laundry if there's something I really want to wear that's dirty.
coconut / 8299 posts
Hardly. We usually wait until we have full loads, which isn't hard with two kids.
pomelo / 5178 posts
We pretty much always have full loads. The only thing I run half-full is the dishwasher, if I run out of clean bottles during the day.

I would rather wait until its a full load, but I know the nanny does small loads. I feel weird saying anything because it seems like, "Hey, can you please STOP helping me so much?"
If our electricity or water bills get out of control I will say something.

I rarely run the dishwasher less than full - I'll dirty up a few dishes just to fill it up.
We have a front-load washer that has multiple cycle settings and "senses" how big the load is, so it's not really less than full, just adjusted.

Sometimes I run a small load of clothes. Esp if Lo made a mess during meal time

@sslm: same. I will sometimes do a load of laundry to make my fave outfit clean for something
pomegranate / 3160 posts
Very rarely. I like to always have everything full (sometimes excessively full...).
pomegranate / 3809 posts
Nope, I never run either unless it's full. It's just the two of us now, so we only run the dishwasher once a week. And I dont like to do laundry, so every 3 or 4 weeks or so I end up doing 4 loads.

I will only run the dishwasher before its full if we're going on vacation so it doesn't stink when we get back.
pear / 1787 posts
I only do the dishwasher if it's full. Sometimes I will wash small loads of clothes if I have a specific reason.
pomelo / 5321 posts
I only run the dishwasher if it's full. We have some laundry that only makes a small load, like whites or gentles. Our washer senses the weight of the clothes and produces water accordingly so I don't feel like I have to fill it up every time.

I never run the dishwasher unless it is full but I probably should, it can take ages to fill up.
We don't have laundry in our unit, it is on the 5th floor so DH does it every two weeks or so. I'm excited to move so we can have laundry in our unit.

Never!!
We pay $1/wash $1/dry for laundry, so we make sure it's as full as can be.
Re: dishwasher we could easily run it twice a day, we accumulate a lot of dishes.
grapefruit / 4649 posts
Our washing machine has a weight sensor so I don't worry about throwing in a small load, if I literally only have an item or two I will pull down curtains or something to make it a bigger load.
The dishwasher is almost always full without a problem but I will run it if it is more than half full and we are just about to generate a ton of dishes (like I am baking a cake-- my favorite requires like 5 bowls! or if we are having people over for dinner.)

Dishwasher, I run when it's full. Washing machine, I think I do about 2-3 loads a week b/c we have a huge washer/dryer.

rarely. unless it's something gross...like puke-covered clothes from a long roadtrip. not that that's ever happened to me or anything...;)
bananas / 9973 posts
Never for the dishwasher. Only if there's something terrible for the wash that I don't want to ruin other items (i.e. floor mats, new jeans).
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
Never the dishwasher but I'll do a small cloth diaper load of laundry if there is diarrhea!
grapefruit / 4669 posts
I only run the dishwasher when it's full and I'll just do a mini load of laundry if I don't have a full one together, but generally we wait until there is a TON of laundry and don't run into that problem!
coconut / 8854 posts
@Mrs. Pen: Man, at my last apartment I lived in it was 1.25 for wash and 1.25 to dry. And if it was a full load, I would have to run the dryer twice! I wish it was only $1!!
Nope! I won't run either until they are both full! My dishwasher I might run a little bit before it's 100% full just because we might be running out of cups/plates/etc
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
We do loads and loads of laundry so we never have a small load unless you count delicates/hand washables.
We hardly use the dishwasher unless we're hosting a party. I do run it ocassionally to flush out the pipes and keep the dishwasher in good condition. When I do that, the load capacity doesn't really matter.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
We only run a half load of dishes if we're going out of town that weekend. I don't like smelly dishes.
But my clothes washer? Oh definitely. I can dial it to small/medium/large loads, so I'll just do a small load on cold water.
bananas / 9628 posts
same as blackbird re running it before we go away & don't wanna come home to nasty dishwasher stink.
never do half loads of laundry or dishes other than above reason. wastes water & i can pretty much always find things that need washing if i want to fill it up
coconut / 8472 posts
We have to run the dishwasher sometimes when it's not full because we tend to fill up the top rack with glasses and bowls quicker than we do the bottom. So we have to run it or we'll have to hand wash glasses, which I hate.
coconut / 8305 posts
Rarely for laundry because we go through alot of clothes but I do occasionally for the dishwasher, especially if DD has had a fussy couple of days and I know I'm going to be gone most of the day... specifically I did this last week when I had only gotten half the dishwasher full before she started fussing and then went ahead and started it before we left so that I'd atleast get THOSE dishes cleaned. I'm pretty horrible at keeping up with things so I do them as soon as I think about it or while I'm standing there otherwise I'm in trouble.

Pretty much only if it's full. It can take the dishwasher days sometimes to fill up because DH prefers to handwash while I like to use the dishwasher.
I always do the laundry and always do full loads because I wait so long (probably once every 3 weeks). Thank God for lots of clothes to wear.
pomelo / 5331 posts
I let laundry pile up, so no on that. We only run the dishwasher when it's not all the way full if we run out of something. We seem to be running ridiculously low on Tupperware and silverware -- I have no CLUE where it goes -- so we've been running it half full a lot more lately. Because god forbid we hand wash something

I actually prefer smaller loads because they're less intimidating to deal with. If I can load/unload the dishwasher, or start/fold/put away laundry in about 5 minutes, that's my sweet spot.
