I thought you were supposed to for tax purposes, but I'm wondering if it's really necessary? I always use the HSA debit card, so it shows on the statements where I spent it.
if you do save them, how long? I just have a big pile in the cabinet I throw them in.

I do save them, but same as you it just turns into a mess (in a file folder rather than a pile, but still a mess). I think I read you’re supposed to keep them for 3 years. We’ve never been audited, but a friend was and had to pay a penalty because she couldn’t show proof of eligibility for all of her purchases.

@bhbee: my husband has binders of each receipt, itemized invoice, and EOB. There's a spreadsheet that reconciles everything. I think it's extreme, but he claims it's mandatory.

@karenbme: yikes, good reminder that it matters. Maybe I should start asking for itemized receipts again, I noticed many of the receipts from cc machines are fading to nothing. And keep hoping we’re a low audit risk since our taxes are very simple!
@Pollywog: I used to be more like this and matched all the EOBs - then life got crazier and I ended up with the pile!

I take a pic of each one and email it to myself to a sorted folder. Easy, I have them, and I never look at it

I scan all my eobs and statements and toss the paper copy. I figure if I need to ever submit anything, its electronic anyways so I don't need original copies.

Love the photo idea! Some of my providers email me the receipt which is very helpful!
