I can't really think of anything odd that I say, but I've only moved from one part of the country to the other.

The only thing I can think of is that I say 'freeway' instead of 'highway'. In the Midwest people say 'highway', but on the West Coast they say 'freeway'. Since I grew up on the West Coast, that's what I'm used to! People here give me a crazy look though, like I'm just making up words.

I grew up just south of Detroit in an area that locals refer to as 'downriver.' So when I started working in Toledo (Ohio) and they asked what part of Michigan I was from, that was what I said. They all looked at me like I was nuts and were like, "Down what river? What do you mean?" Well, except for my two co-workers also from that area, haha.

In the south part of the US I had a very confusing conversation with a waitress when I ordered a Coke, she asked me what kind, and I just looked really confused and said regular. We went back and forth for a bit before she looked at me like an idiot and said, "Ohh, you mean coca-cola!" Ummm yes. That's what I thought I had said! I didn't realize that they say coke instead of pop down there.

@swurlygurl: I'm surprised people give you a crazy look for that! I use freeway, highway, and expressway interchangeably.

Definitely the coke thing! From the South, so I had some issues when I moved to CO for a while. Also, I call plastic grocery bags "kroger bags," and there are no krogers in CO, so I got some *really* weird looks for that one.

@Kimberlybee: Haha, I love hearing that in the Midwest - cracks me up! My Dad was raised in South Carolina though, so I was mostly used to all the 'Southern' speak

It's funny - I tend to use the word parkway for highway. I also say "stand on line" instead of "in line." Btw I'm from NY. We're going to Charleston, SC for a few days this summer so I'll have to remember the Coke thing

@imbali: Haha yes! But they're actually named that like the Grand Central Parkway, Northern State parkway, etc.

I'm from Central PA, and there are definitely some "PA Dutch" things that we say that people don't get. Like "rutching" - when Hubs is squirming around and can't settle in bed, I tell him, "Quit rutching!" My mom has always made fun of me because I saw the word on like "awn," whereas apparently the rest of the country says "ahn."

@Shutterbug: My husband says room like that too! Drives me crazy, lol.

I don't think I say anything weird, though DH and I disagree on the pronunciation of syrup. I say it like sir-up, and he says it like seer-up.

@TemperanceBrennan: Ha! I had a friend in high school who grew up in Minnesota, and she said things the same way. It was most noticeable when she said bagel. "Bay-gle."

@littlebug: wait, is there another way to say Bagel? I say bay-gle too. I'm from NJ!

@kjpugs: @TemperanceBrennan: @littlebug: I think that bay-gle is the norm. I went to school with a girl from somewhere in the NE and she pronounced it 'baaah-gle' - THAT was weird!

@littlebug: ahh yes I've made fun of a friend who called it a "beggle"

I grew up in NY, but moved to New England after high school. Whenever I go back to NY, they laugh at the way I say "ass." They find it hilarious that now I say it like "ahss", when they say it "ayss" (think like the accent in that old TV show "The Nanny"!). I can't swear without being laughed at!

I've never known anyone from Pennsylvania and I had no idea about all of the language quirks!
