How do you feel about carseats that your kids no longer use and giving them away/selling them. Do you think they should have a decent amount of life left in them if you're going to sell them? Or is donation the way to go?

I will donate. I don't want someone to have an issue down the road and come back to me- it may be paranoid. However I just don't feel good about taking money for a used car seat.
I did use a used car seat from my sister and it was great to know the history.

I gave our bucket seat to my husband's cousin. It was already a hand-me-down - my friend used it, then we did, then she used it for her second kid, we used it for our second kid, and now it's with our cousin for its last little bit of life before it expires.

@youboots: I feel this way, too. And I think I'd rather someone HAVE a carseat and use it than not use one at all.
We sold our infant seat when it was just 1 year old, I felt okay about that.

I thought you're not "allowed" to sell used car seats but maybe that's just in California? I don't know if it's a real law. I'd be ok receiving a used car seat to someone we knew and trusted - and I'd be ok giving it away to someone who was close to us.

If it isn't expired, I am okay with giving it to someone for their use, with the explanation that they need to keep track of the expiration date.
If it's expired, I cut the straps and recycle what I can and trash the rest.

As long as it isn't expired, I donate or give to a friend who needs one. I gave my infant seat to my friend who just had baby #4. The one she used with her other kids expired.

I actually assume ours will expire before we're ready to give them away (3.5 year age gap between kids). At that point, I'll cut the straps and recycle.
If by chance, we're done with our infant seat early, I'll donate to a friend with the guidance of the upcoming expiration date, and disclose that we did have it go under the airplane a couple of times.

I think it's fine to sell or donate if it isn't expired and has been used and cleaned according to the instructions. Just be upfront about the manufacturing and expiration date. While I would never buy a used seat there are people who will so putting a properly used seat on the market seems okay.
For expired seats you can trash/recycle it, save it for one of the trade in events (or give it to someone else to use at the event), or ask a CPST if they need any for demo purposes.

I bought our bucket seat used, so it didn't have much time left before expiration by the time LO outgrew it. It's waiting in the basement for a trade-in opportunity.
I don't know how much time our convertibles will have left by the time DD outgrows them, but I will look to donate or pass on to family/friends.

We recycled our infant seat. I'm not super comfortable selling/donating. It's probably weird because I know that they haven't been in accidents, but on a philosophical level I feel like people shouldn't be buying/taking used seats from strangers because you just don't know.

I had my nephew's old infant seat and it expired the month after my second baby turned one, so I gave it to a friend to use as a trade in.
I don't expect to have much time left on our other seats once we are done with them, but if we do I would give to a friend but be unlikely to donate it unless I knew a specific need. And wouldn't sell it.
