Do any of you sew? I learned as a kid from my grandmother, and got really good at it...and then I got out of practice during and after college. Pregnancy sparked my interest again since there are SO many things I can make for Baby Grizz, so DH surprised me with a sewing workshop in two weeks! I'm so excited. Any tips, tricks, sewing blogs, or tutorial pages I should know of? How can I keep learning after I work through my rusty-ness?

Oh so fun! I'm subscribing to this! I know how to do a straight line for pajamas, pillowcases and baby legs. But I'm still longing to learn more. Hopefully by the time I have grandkids.

Yep! My grandma was a seamstress, my mom learned from her and I learned from my mom. Pinterest dude, there are SO many cute, free sewing patterns and tutorials. I have an entire board filled with them but I don't know that I'm allowed to post the link.

I just learned how to sew a couple months ago. I really like it! I haven't made too many things yet. I'd love to make some baby clothes one day.

I am learning. I'd definitely like to get better! My friend got me into quilting so I usually have a project going. I'm pretty much only good for straight lines.

@MediaNaranja: Quilting is on my to-do list! My great grandmother and grandmother are amazing at quilting, so I don't want that tradition in our family to stop with them. I really want to learn.

@grizz: Basic quilting isn't really that hard. I've been wanting to make one for C for a while, but my sewing machine is old and grumpy and I don't know if I trust it. lol

I learned sewing basics from my mom, and enjoy sewing when I get a chance, but still can't sew a straight line for the life of me. Then again, I can't draw or cut a straight line either so...

@grizz: It's easier than I thought it would be! It's just sewing things together, cutting them apart, then sewing them back together again. I like it because I am a very math/engineering-type person, so this kind of creativity appeals to me (it's like engineering with fabric, ha!). It is now my go-to gift for weddings, housewarmings, and babies.

I do, and i actually taught myself too. I enjoy it so much that i considered applying to be on Project Runway. But the 15 page long application and Mandatory video i had to submit kinda killed that.......I'm waaaayyyy too lazy for that.

i took sewing lessons when i was younger, but haven't sewn anything recently. i really want a sewing machine so i can make things once we have a LO.

I hated sewing when I was younger, then a few years ago I really got into it. I love sewing, but rarely follow patterns :). I've done quilts and bedding, lots of toys and some clothes for the girls.

Do any of you know how to applique? That's a biggie for me. I won't learn it in this workshop, but I REALLY want to learn how because I love all the cute little boys appliqued stuff.

An easy (albeit pricy) way to do those would be to use the Silhoutte Cameo, You draw/pick whatever you want and it cuts the shape from whatever fabric you put into it.

@grizz: I do a lot of name appliques what i found to be easiest is 1. find font and print in the scale, 2 if its going on something light i trace it a light table helps with this, if its going on something dark i will actually pin the piece of paper to the fabric and sew an out line of the letters then rip the paper away. 3 I prefer to sew them by had with embroidery floss (i use just 2 of the 6 strands). 4 if its cursive i start at the end of the word and work backwards and just make long stitches practically on top of each other. if the fabric is wimpy i'll put a piece of interfacing behind it

I have a sewing machine... does that count? I've sewn a few things with it but mostly, I wait until my mother's over and use her guidance since she's been sewing things for my family since we were little kids. I can hand sew too.

Just started in recent years. So, far I've only made some Halloween costumes for the kids. I just wing it and search for tutorials on YouTube.

once you cut out the letters you can use the a tighter zig zag stitch on the machine to go around the edges just go slow and lots of pins to hold it in place

Yes. I've been quilting since I was 12 and hand sewing since I was like 5. I prefer hand sewing now but can still whip out a quilt in less than a day.
