My mom doesn't celebrate Mother's Day (we have weird family issues), and MIL is really good about making it "my" day with my family. I think the past two years, we've done half a day with them, and then the other half with just my husband and our kids.

Ex: we'll go over to MIL's for brunch, but then the 4 of us will have dinner to celebrate my Mother's Day.

I'm not big on Mother's Day, so I don't mind "sharing" a Hallmark holiday with anyone.

We celebrate all the mother's in the family together (me, my mom, my grandma, and my aunt). DH does not make a big deal about celebrating me on mother's day. My in-laws live far away so usually just a Happy Mother's Day text to MIL.

We usually get together with my mom at some point (and my brother joins us) to celebrate both my mom and me, though it's not always on Mother's Day. We don't do anything for MIL...

We don't really get into any of the Hallmark holidays. We should probably work on that, but it is so hard to get fired up for a holiday like that! We'll do something with MIL if she is in town but otherwise just a phone call is all we do.

We do. On Mother's day we have to go see my mom, MIL and both grandmas. It really sucks the fun out of the day. May be selfish to say, but I want to enjoy my first few Mother's days, not have to spend the whole day going back and forth between family members. Growing up it wasn't bad because it was just my mom and then we'd go to grandmas. Add DH's family to that and the whole day becomes about them.

We have a family family and our extended family is also small at this time and everyone lives within 15 minutes. Last year we invited both our families to our home for dinner. The year before we had Saturday dinner with the in laws and Sunday brunch with my family.

Last Mother's Day was my first, as a mom. We spent the Saturday evening before with MIL/SILs (who are also mothers), and had a family BBQ. The next morning, we had a nice brunch with my family.

Not sure about this year, as we've moved. Splitting the weekend up between the moms would require a lot of back-and-forth driving. Our families like each other, but we don't usually have shared holiday functions.

My mom passed away a while ago, so we spend it with MIL

I was just thinking about this today. Last year LO was in the NICU. I would like to just spend the day with DH and LO.

We usually see my mom. My MIL lives out of state so we'll probably Skype with her. This year my mom's going to be out of town, though, so we'll spend it together just the 3 of us (which I'm actually looking forward to!).

We are doing brunch with my parents, M's parents and friends. It's just as much their day as it is mine.

All us moms get together and go out for lunch.

We usually get together with my family and do brunch some where low key. Maybe go swim in my sister's pool if the weather is good. My ILs live far away, so never do these type of holidays with them.

Now that all of us siblings are married, we are trying to get the family to do a late afternoon get together for dessert and to celebrate my mom, but leaving the day open for personal celebration. My mom isn't very happy about the transition, and pouts, which drives me crazy. We are sticking to our guns and I like celebrating with my little family alone.

@jetsa: Same! I take B and go to my mom's and DH does whatever with his mom. I don't need my own day. One day my mom won't be around and I'm going to cherish these memories together.

Yes. I don't think we've ever spent Mother's Day with MIL though except for a few years back when we were on vacation with her. Usually we have lunch with my mom and extended family!
