I hate it, but I do. The workers there are awful. Poor Sam Walton must just be rolling over in his grave. We grocery shop at Walmart and buy our household items there like toilet paper, paper towels, detergent, etc.

We've been to Walmarts in other states and they've been great, but the Walmarts in our state are AWFUL. Nothing is ever in the right spot, no one ever knows what they're doing... a few times we've ordered things off their website with ship to store because of a great deal, and the time we spend in the store waiting for them to find our item is TOTALLY not worth the money we save, and every single time we do it we promise ourselves we will never step foot in the store again!!!

We shop at Amazon, Drugstore.com/Soap.com, and Fresh Direct!
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
I do, although DH won't because he wants to support the local businesses.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
There are WalMarts everywhere in the state that I'm from and I grew up shopping there. We moved to South Florida and they are few and far between. I got used to shopping at Super Target and Publix grocery stores, but occassionally I'll journey to a WM and I'm blown away by how cheap everything is. It's remarkably cheaper than Super Target. I mean, I pay for it in years off my life when I go to check out and wait in line half an hour, but it IS super cheap!
pomegranate / 3890 posts
ya i shop there bc of thier prices but the lines are supppper long, also some of thier business policies i dont agree with but when you need to save money, you need to save money!
eggplant / 11824 posts
No, never. I'd rather spend a little more and know I'm
not supporting their business practices.
ETA: much of the stuff there is low quality (like clothes) and if you take good care of your clothes, it's cheaper in the long run to buy higher quality/more expensive items.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Grace: I like supporting small businesses too but in a rural area there aren't any that carry regular daily household items.
I mostly shop at Costco and Trader Joes, but I will make quick trips to Walmart because it's right across the street from my house, it's merely for convenience. If I lived next to a target, I would go there.
@yoursilverlining: yeah I agree about the quality. But I would buy a few clothing pieces there if I don't plan to keep it long. It depends. Like right now, I'm still about 17 lbs+ from my pregnancy and don't fit in my clothes, so I have though about getting a few basic pieces to get me through the summer/until I am back into my old clothes.

I shop there every so often for things like laundry detergent.
pomegranate / 3980 posts
I shop there all the time! The one in my area is great, the workers are really nice.
pomelo / 5628 posts
I show my AP students the documentary "Walmart: The High Cost of the Low Price." It's pretty shocking! I have shopped there, maybe twice, but as a rule I do not shop at Walmart.
pineapple / 12234 posts
No, unless it's for something that we've been searching for that only Walmart carries. For example, DS got a power wheel's truck for Christmas and Walmart had the best price.
Every time I've gone there for groceries it's been bad, moldy or half eaten/stolen. Even laundry detergent was half gone but of course DH didn't realize that until he brought it home!
I think we just have really crappy walmarts around but I will not shop at them!
eggplant / 11287 posts
Nope, we mainly shop at Costco, Target, and Fred Meyer (a grocery store in our area). I haven't been in a wal mart since I was in middle school!
pineapple / 12526 posts
I never did too much before moving to the UK but I totally miss Wal-Mart now. lol
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
Yeah, we do but not often. I only go during non-peak hours.
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
No. I went in there once and was horrified!! Our Walmart is a total dump!!
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
No, NEVER. Never ever.
And it's not because of the big box thing--we still shop at Target.
It's because the people and crowds mess with us (and DH has PTSD from Iraq). Once I had to literally race DH out of the store to prevent him from punching people. We don't go there anymore.
eggplant / 11824 posts
@Coco Bee: If you are not opposed to pre-worn items, check out ebay for short term clothing purchases. I got a bunch of mat tops there that are good brands and look brand new, and the most expensive one was $8 (with shipping!). Only downside is you can't try things on (obviously)
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
Between the business practices and the difficulty getting in and out of there it's just not worth any savings. We try to shop local as much as possible... Well, local and target.
blogger / pomelo / 5400 posts
Now that we have a choice, rarely. But it used to be pretty much the only option for stuff in our old town without a 90-minute drive.
I am willing to pay a little more at Target. The shopping experience is just so much better.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
I don't. I prefer Target!
Although.. I have gone to some super Walmarts that are nice and clean..
pear / 1861 posts
I used to...then I learned how to coupon.LOL Now I shop at Publix where shopping really IS a pleasure!
Too many ppl and when I went recently just because since I hadn't been there in a while, the cashier checed my reuseable bag! Heck, you putting stuff BACK into it, no need to check it twice. Probably aren't used to those bags there.lol
grapefruit / 4800 posts
I stopped because of their business practices. But now when I've gone in their with friends or family I find that their prices aren't that good. I get higher quality products by shopping elsewhere. If we do need big box store items, we shop around elsewhere, my dad got a computer from Walmart and got 'upsold' on the warranty and it was terrible, they wouldn't cover anything.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Hardly at the retail store but if it's cheaper I'm buying it there. Sorry, I'm not rich enough to have morals. Just kidding!
But seriously our crib is from there, the other day we needed more bottles they were the only ones locally who had them IN the store. So, why not?
I would LOVE to support only small local business but their pricing is usually SO much more expensive. I just can't do it if I can go to Target et al and spend much less.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@regberadaisy: exactly how I feel! I shop at Walmart because of the price, not because I enjoy the experience.
grapefruit / 4800 posts
@crash806: Apparently Target is starting to win when it comes to prices
http://consumerist.com/2011/04/is-walmart-or-target-cheaper.html
I think Walmart being cheaper must depend on location or maybe stuff that's bought or something because especially with sales at other stores Walmart really doesn't ever win when it comes to prices where I live.
honeydew / 7687 posts
Honestly, for the things I buy anyways, Target is cheaper. I go in if I win a Walmart giftcard from a blog or a sweepstakes and am horrified at the experience, and surprised at the lack of savings.
Even if they were, I don't support their practices in treating employees or investing in communities. No thanks!
grapefruit / 4056 posts
Occasionally, our local one is really clean, organized and well-stocked, and not too busy/crowded, so it isn't annoying to shop there. We are in a small city, and it is hard to find some items anywhere else.
persimmon / 1341 posts
No! I absolutely despise Walmart and feel my blood pressure rising every time I even turn in the parking lot. I go maybe once every 2-3 months because they carry something I can't find elsewhere. In our area the prices at Walmart really aren't any cheaper than other grocery stores. And, my husband's a union guy and wants to support our union grocery store and not walmart.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
oh, i shop at walmart ALL THE TIME. i prefer target for some things, but we buy all of our groceries, household items, office supplies, pet supplies, most all the necessities there. our walmart is very nice, and we've never had problems with crowds or crazies. i tried couponing, but i found that shopping walmart with no coupons was still cheaper. i think i'm probably in there once or twice a week, and not ashamed!
ETA: i think i'm in a very different salary bracket/part of the country/walk of life than most of the other posters here. walmart is totally the norm here.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@photojane: I hear you. I have never found another store, with the exception of Aldi's, that has lower prices than Walmart.
@Maysprout: @scg00387: I'm surprised at this. I have never found Target to be cheaper than Walmart. I go there for fun at lunch during work and check their prices. I wish they were cheaper, it's such a nicer experience.
pomegranate / 3604 posts
We do pretty much exclusively, but there are a few outstanding factors:
1) Canadian Wal-Marts = totally differently run company than their US counterparts.
2) DH works there (and I used to), so we receive a 10% discount on everything but clearance items. Simply cannot beat that.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
Not often because they aren't that near to us. Target is though. As for the business practices, there are a lot of crappy jobs out there and to be honest I don't know why everyone always talks about Walmart...
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
I prefer Target because the Wal-Mart near us is pretty rough. But in college I shopped there all the time because the one in my college town was well kept.
pomelo / 5321 posts
We shop at Walmart. It's cheap and it saves us a lot of money. I can buy laundry detergent for several dollars cheaper than I can at our local grocery stores. The "experience" does vary a lot from store to store.
Right now, we live in a town that has one Walmart. The employees have always been great but the shoppers are terrible. It's always packed and it sends my blood pressure through the roof. (Why can't you say excuse me?) We don't shop there very often. If we're running low on some non-grocery items, that's where we go. But for the most part, we shop at HyVee. If we lived in our hometown, i think we would mostly shop at Walmart.
@photojane: It's totally the norm in my hometown too. There are 4 Walmarts there and I know 3 of them are Super Walmarts.
@mediagirl: exactly! I've never found Target to be cheaper than Walmart either!
