Charlie falls asleep on his own but I'd been staying with Olive until she fell asleep. Which would often take forever! But now I've been leaving her after storytime, and she's been putting herself to sleep pretty well (knock on wood). Makes life so much easier! They put themselves to sleep as babies, but the 2's were so hard once they were out of their cribs.
Do your LOs put themselves to sleep?

No, after stories I give her a big hug and a kiss, say my little lullaby and put her down. Takes 2 minutes. Knock on wood, she has always been good about going down!

No, we did for a about a week a few months ago when lo started freaking out at bed time, but we're back to giving her a kiss, cuddle, put her in bed, say night night and close the door. She usually rolls over and goes straight to sleep. She gets annoyed now if we stay in her room any longer then normal.

D was always good at putting himself to sleep. He always did best when left alone to drift off.
M still nurses to sleep. It's something I would love to change.

We did for a few months but it took over an hour sometimes 2 for her to fall asleep. We don't anymore and now it takes 15-20 mins.

No, at 16 months he has been putting himself to sleep without us for quite some time. He actually seems like he can't wait for the crib some nights and just wants us to leave!

DH does and it drives me nuts. On nights when I put DD1 down she sleeps really soon after I close the door. On his nights he's in there for an hour or two because she gets wound up that daddy is there to play with.
DD2 is still nursing so I'm in charge.

Never! Since we moved them out of our room into their cribs at 6-8 months they both put themselves to sleep.
E went through a phase at 18 months where we'd have to put her back in bed because she'd goof around but it passed

I get the heck out of dodge. If I'm super tired, I'll stay in bed with DD (since she's in a bed and not in a crib), but then I just fall asleep.

We're back to nursing to sleep every night. For a while after sleep training we were able to put them down drowsy, but that went to hell at some point this winter. They have to be really asleep to put them down. I don't know how I'm ever going to quit breastfeeding at this point because they won't know how to do anything without it.

We had a lovely few months from ~12 mo to 16/17 mo where we just put him down and walked away. Then his stranger anxiety peaked, and he started demanding I stay in there and hold his hand to fall asleep. He's generally asleep in 15-30 min. We tried CIO this week once, but he hysterically screamed for mama for 40 min while I sobbed in the other room until he finally passed out. The next day I decided I couldn't do that again. So back to holding his hand....

But how do you put them to sleep then? If I try to do that she will stand up and cry hysterically for a loooooong time! A few times she's gotten so worked up she fell out of her crib trying to reach after me as I leave the room. (She's a very tall 2 year old). Please help me!!

No, it would take too long. She's 27 months and I sit with her for a little bit and sing a few songs, kiss her good night and then leave. Sometimes she gets up from her bed and calls for us. I'll go and tuck her back in and leave right away. Some nights she calls for us multiple times and sometimes none at all, but she always falls asleep on her own eventually.

@twodoghouse: Story of my life with M. She will go down for her first nap of the day without nursing but not her second or bedtime. I do enjoy the snuggles but at the same time I hate that that has become our habit. I have no idea when she'll quit nursing but I doubt it'll be anytime soon after her 1st birthday.

@gracecat: @travelgirl1: My LO was the same way! We read no cry sleep for toddlers and tried to do sone trading down sleep associations but it was hard. I was not willing to do cry it out, but was getting so tired.
When she was a little over two, we started "big girl time" where she stays in her room and is quiet before I go back in and sing to her. We started with very short periods and gradually lengthened them. This worked pretty well but then we had some back sliding. So we just finished about a month of incentive based encouragement that culminated in LO earning the movie Frozen (she is 3 now). I still tell her I will come in to check on her but she is usually asleep before I do.

For DS, No. He is 2.5 and we leave him to play in his room for a bit. DH goes in to check on him and put him in his bed (sometimes he is already laying in his bed falling asleep) and he goes to sleep on his own. DD is 8 months and I stay with her until she is asleep.

No thank goodness. I have tried when I was desperate, but it always backfires...I stay in forever, am scared to leave, then he wakes up anywhere as I tiptoe out.

Never have really. Not counting when she was an infant and fell asleep in our arms. Now, if we are in there, it is clearly not bedtime. She usually cries for a couple seconds and then stops and either plays until she is tired or rolls over and falls asleep.

DS - went thru several phases of someone needing to be in there until he fell asleep - I got in LOTS of reading time. I would say in the past 6 months he can finally do it alone (6.5 yrs old)
DD - I have never had to stay in her room (4yrs)

Yes - always for both sons. They need me to fall asleep. Some days I wish I had more time to myself in the evenings, but generally I don't mind at all. I WOH so this is more time I get to spend with them one on one. This time will go by fast and soon they won't need me to. But for now, I truly enjoy every single snuggle that comes with it.

No way! Both girls are great about putting themselves to sleep and I intend to keep it that way 
Besides, I love hearing them chat to themselves and sing as they wind down for the night.

We used to when he first came home because he was not used to sleeping in a room alone. But not anymore. It's bedtime story and night-night.
