Do you take your BBT at the same time each morning? I usually wake up at 3 or 4:30...will the difference impact my BBT?

I'm no expert since I only temped for a month or two... But I believe if you are pretty consistent in taking your temp as soon as you wake up, it should be fine, no matter what time... But it's also best to temp after at least 3-4 hours of sleep at a minimum. Are you using Fertility Friend? You can input your temp times and FF will note when/if your temps aren't consistent. It's best to temp as much as possible though to try and see patterns, but it's helpful to look back also and take into acct that sometimes a temp might be off due to a difference in taking the temp at a different time or condition (traveling, time zone change, etc) than usual. Hope this makes sense!

I temp between 6:30 and 7 and that doesn't make a difference. However, I often temp betwen 8 and 9 on weekends and that does make a difference. I'm really not sure how it will work for you when it's that early in the morning. Perhaps you will be so sound asleep at either time that it won't make a difference? Does your chart go up and down all the time and look wacky? If so, then I'd say that it's quite possible that it makes a difference. If it's fairly flat, then I'd say you are good to go.

I think it's important to be consistent within about a half hour the same time every day. More than that, and the data will like be inaccurate. I temp at 5:20 or 5:30am every day during the week and try to by 6am on weekends, but don't always get up in time, so know those won't be accurate if it's 6:30am or later. FertilityFriend will give you an open circle (meaning it's not accurate) if you go outside your normal time by an hour or so.

@Grace: Today was my first day tracking so I don't have anything to compare it with yet!
@JoJoGirl: good to know. I am going to start reading TCOYF!
@NYCaliMama: thanks!

@autumnlove: lol- sorry. You'll just have to wait and see. If your chart goes up and down a lot, then you'll know it won't work. If you are on Fertility Friend, you could post it here and then we'd be able to tell you if it's too wacky.

Do you get out of bed at that time, or do you just open your eyes and fall back asleep? I only took my temps when I was getting out of bed, even if it was just to pee at 5 am.

I take mine between 7:30-8:00 every morning depending on when I wake up (I don't have to be at work until 9:00). I think if there's a big difference in timing, like over an hour, you might have some difference, but mine have all been pretty consistent regardless of the 30 minute difference.

@autumnlove: According to TCOYF, it should really be at exactly the same time every day. She says a half hour later corresponds to about a .1 increase in temp, a half hour earlier about a .1 decrease in temp.

During the week, I always took my temp around 6:30. But on the weekends, it was more like 8:00 or 9:00. Although there was a slight impact on the temps, it was never enough that FF couldn't still figure out when I ovulated and such.

@JoJoGirl: I don't know if that's true for everybody. I can get up 30 minutes later and it doesn't make a difference. I've even walked downstairs to the bathroom with the thermometer in my mouth and it didn't make a difference. I really think it's unique to every person, which is why FF says not to adjust temperatures.

I find it does make a little difference if I temp later than usual, and if I drink a lot the night before. I set my alarm to temp at 6:30 every day, though I don't actually get up for work until 7. I just temp and go back to sleep and record it later.

@Grace: Oh really?! Good to know! My temps are NEVER EVER the same ever, so I have no idea what affects it and what doesn't.

From the research that I did it sounded like you needed to take it at the same time every day for the temperatures to be truly consistent. I’d always set my alarm for the earliest that I’d ever wake up, temp at that time and then go back to sleep if I didn’t need to be up as early that day. Using that method I was always able to detect O with true temp shifts. Good luck!

My temps are very different in between the first hour of waking. I usually var by a half a degree if I take it 30 min later! lol
