There are a lot of sayings about how moms make great parents... for example:
* A mother's intuition
* Mommy knows best
I always thought of these as pretty harmless sayings. But lately, I've noticed that sometimes they're used in a way that elevates moms over dads. As in, a mom will have an intuitive sense for her child that a dad will not.
My sense is that the primary caretaker of a child usually knows best. Usually that's the mom, but it can also be a dad. If you're spending the most time with a child, then you're likely to be the first to notice if something is wrong. I don't think that's necessarily tied to gender? Curious what you guys think though.
Can a dad be as good a parent as a mom?
Or put another way: say you met a stay-at-home mom and her child at the playground and then the next day you met a stay-at-home dad with his child. Barring any other information, would you assume the mom is probably a better parent than the dad?
