Or at least change the name? I found this article really interesting. I think it's cool that some areas have changed the name to "Indigenous People's Day."

I do not have the day off, but I would feel the same if I did. I think if people want to maintain the holiday from work, we could always do what some cities have already done (like Seattle) and reframe it as Indigenous People's Day. I've never even really thought about it. I think we should have Veterans Day off instead of Columbus day, though! They're far more important IMO! And far more American

I don't think we should honor CC anymore. He didn't discover America; even if we only count Europeans as those capable of discovery (which is ridiculous anyway). Plus he was a hugely racist asshole. It's ok for America to admit he was a dink not worth celebrating and move on.

I recently saw that oatmeal article and indeed my city, Seattle, has renamed it. I am glad there is so much awareness surrounding Columbus Day this year.

I had it off, but I think it's a pretty non-pc holiday. It's kind of horrifying thinking about the things we learned in school as a kid, like that he "discovered" America.

@nana87: I agree that Election day makes so much more sense. We used to get that off when I taught in Philly, but mostly because so many schools are polling places and the students' safety couldn't be guaranteed with so many random people roaming about.

The article starts off with the premise we didn't know things about Columbus when the federal holiday was enacted, but I beg to differ. There is nothing new under the sun. There were historians back then. Romanticising figures and history is not new.
Columbus Day is in the tail end of the US Hispanic Heritage Month. Ironic isn't it? This man good or bad (umm bad) changed the landscape of the Americas. We should remember him, not revere him or celebrate him.
I agree let's start celebrating the people who were here before the Americas became the Americas. Schools in my city did not have the day off.

@Mamaof2: Not everybody gets Veteran's Day off. My office does not, nor did we get Columbus Day or Election Day off. We do get MLK Jr. Day and President's Day off.

@avivoca: @Mamaof2: We don't get any of those days off! We only get New Year's, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Day after Christmas off. Although we do have 3 floating holidays we can use whenever.
