My DH gives tips like you. I'm the same way as your DH so I don't.

I've wondered about this too! There are a few places near my work that put out a tip jar but they don't require a signature if you swipe a card so there's no opportunity to tip on the credit card receipt.

Here's what I've always wondered... Why do people tip at places like Starbucks but not at fast food (eg McDonalds)?

I agree with your DH, if no one is doing anything there is no need for a tip. If your just picking up take out, and tip, then there isn't even anyone that the money can go to, directly.

DH insists on takeout instead of delivery because he doesn't want to tip. He is a much better tipper than I am anyway, so in his mind he is saving alot.

When we ate takeout alot we had a few go-to places and the food was already expensive IMO, so I didn't feel bad not tipping since we ate there so frequently.

I don't tip on takeout, but will for delivary.

I don't tip for takeout either. My Chinese place has a line for it on the receipt when I swipe my card, but they are also a full service restaurant so they may just not have the ability to remove that line from the receipt when it's a takeout order.

I think them taking my order is just part of their job. If I were to stay there, eat, mess up a table, etc. then of course I would tip, as I would at any restaurant where I did that.

I almost always do. Someone does have to pack it, which I'm sure takes a few minutes, and if its bar pickup, then a bartender is taking time to help me, which is taking time away from their bar customers. Also, I'm not sure how it is now, but I had a good friend who worked at outback, and who hated the nights she worked takeout. She got paid the same as serving, but half the people didn't tip. My mom was a waitress for a long time when i was little to make ends meet, so I just have a soft spot.

I used to all the time, but then realized no one was really doing anything...why should I be tipping close to what I'd tip for a full-service meal, when no one is serving me?

I also tip. At our local Vietnamese place they now know me and always include some extras in our take out bag!

I tip for takeout if it's somewhere we go a lot and they always do a good job. I usually just do a couple of dollars. This mainly applies if we find a good Chinese takeout place.

It depends on the place I guess. Pizza pick up, no - for the reasons others stated. Restaurants or places I go to often, like our local bagel shop or deli I will.
