I went to pick up fajitas that we ordered the other night and the girl at theTo-Go register told me pointedly that the amount does not include tip.
So I was wondering... do you tip when you pick up food? (NOT delivery!) Ifso, how much?

Depends. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. My girlfriend was a hostess and she told me those tips go to the hostesses so I do if the hostess was helpful/friendly. But usually only 10%

I will occasionally, if it's a place they deliver it to the car. But if I have to go in to pick it up I don't.

Almost never. Maybe if they ask me if I want something to drink while I wait!

I never did until a friend who works a second job as a server told me that sometimes she gets assigned to pack to-go orders for the night along with just a few tables. I don't think that's the norm at all restaurants, but I tip a little just in case.

I answered no, because it's rare. Like @Marfi: said, maybe if they came out to my car. We go to the same places for takeout, so the restaurant are getting repeat businesa.

I worked as a server and usually one person was assigned to go and then they didn't get as many tables for the night. So if it's a place where a server prepares take out orders I tip 10%. If the hostess or kitchen packs it then I do not tip.

I do. The restaraunt I worked in as a teenager pays their 'to go' person the same wages as a server (also the hostesses got paid the same + tip share). Of course if they don't end up making enough to make minimum wage, the restaraunt will increase the wages that week to make up for the difference.

I do. I used to work at a restaurant where part of the waitstaff's job was to put together take-out orders -- making sure everything was there, packing it up, putting in napkins and forks and stuff. That wasn't a big job, but a few dollars was nice especially for a large order.

I do at sit down places.
If it's quick service....free birds, panera etc I only do if I pay with card and there's a line for it.

I usually add a dollar or two if it's a real restaurant. I used to be one of those "waitresses", and it paid $3.50/hour. So like, an Applebees, I would. But not all of them.

Not usually, unless it's a big, complicated order. But, for an easy sandwich for me, usually not.

@whodat: before you tip, do you check to make sure everything is in the bag. We take out at a rib place and the staple the bag shut. Once they left out a side and utensils. We didn't even know we were supposed to get brown sugar for the sweet potato fries until a new girl asked us. That place is too pricey to get things wrong and get a tip on top. One time we had IHOP takeout and I got halfway home and I get a call telling me I forgot my sausage. Really how did I forget something you packed. These wxperiwnces and others leave me tip-weary.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: To me, it's more important to make people know they're appreciated than to risk losing/wasting a few dollars because they messed up. If a place repeatedly messes up my order I wouldn't get take out from there anymore. But if I like a place and plan on returning, I always try to give a few extra bucks so they remember that I'm the nice one who tips

Nope. If I'm picking it up, all I'm paying for is the food, which is priced in the menu. Which is what I pay for!

@whodat: true, true. These ribs are so good we roll with the mess ups

@whodat: while I agree with you, we actually call places and tell them how much we enjoyed their meals! I'd rather do that than spend a few extra bucks picking up my meal and no one to serve me wine (except my husband, lol)!!

@blackbird: As someone who worked for Applebee's the people who do takeout get paid normal minimum wage (as opposed to the tipped wage of 3.50/hr) as it is not a "tipped" position. Not saying you should change what you do just sharing my knowledge.

Nope, but then again I don't ever tip. It's nice living in a country where we don't tip for anything because everyone gets a decent wage, regardless of the job they do.
I always forget who to tip and how much when I go back to the States so I am quite sure I don't tip some people that would otherwise expect a tip (takeaway people, baristas etc, yeah no, I'm not going to tip you for doing your job).

It depends, but usually I'll leave a tip if my order is large.

No. I usually just get a sandwich or something small so I do not see the need.

I usually do 10% or less at places that are typically sit-down like Chili's or Carrabba's, especially if they deliver it to the car and I don't have to go in.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@marfi, ah okay. Well I didn't want to specifically call out the chain I used to work for, but it's along the same style of food. But thanks for the info! Our place was definitely paying barely above minimum service wages. But this was back when that min wage was $2.50

If it's a restaurant that we would usually sit down in, then yes, otherwise no. I mean a nicer restaurant where 90% of the business is sit down, but they happen to do take out.
