I never did, though I'm usually very conscientious about tipping well in other arenas. I think it's because I just haven't seen it, and it feels awkward! But I can be convinced that it's important! What do you all do?

Nope. I guess I never really thought of it. I never got tipped as an assistant who washed hair.

Hmm, I've only had my hair washed by my actual hairdresser. I guess I've never been to a big enough place that has assistants.

I don't ever get my hair washed/go to places with assistants. The only reason this didn't confuse me was because of Tabitha's Salon Takeover...

I only ever get my hair washed by the hairdresser, so I just tip her afterwards.

I don't because I don't see her at any point other than the shampoo. It would be awkward to walk with money in my hand. The salon has envelopes to leave tips in so I could leave a tip there. It's nice because the envelopes are essentially anonymous. I figured it's like a waitress tipping a bartender - that the stylist would take care of it.

My former stylist owned the salon and she would have her assistant wash my hair. I tipped the assistant if she did a good job: nice scrub, did not get me wet, and quickly changed my towel from wet to dry. I always try to tip them at least half a tank of gas. $2-4

My stylist washes, cuts, and styles my hair. Never been to a place where I had a separate lady wash my hair.

My stylist washes, cuts, and blows out my hair at every appointment. I tip her, generously.

Yes, she's really good and gives me a nice scalp massage afterwards. I know she only makes money by washing hair so i always tip about $3-5, depending on if i got my hair dyed.

It's always my hairdresser who washes my hair! We don't have classy places around here

this is foreign to me... my stylist washes, cuts, dries and styles my hair.

@Mrs. Pen: I *think* (at least around these parts) it's an owner thing. The owner of the salon does my hair and she has an assistant. The other stylists in the salon seem to all wash their own customers hair.

@LindsayInNYC: i thought that too but when I got my hair done for the first time with a separate hair washer, I asked the stylist if they got "tipped out" and she said no. So I always tip.
It's surprising how any non tippers there are, because everyone seems to be big tippers per the restaurant tipping thread.

Yes. My stylist doesn't wash my hair so I give a few bucks to the person doing the hair washing.

I never do but then again I can't tip myself. lol. Every time I get my hair cut I wash my own hair beforehand because I don't feel like spending extra money to pay somebody to do something I can do myself. The very few times I forgot and had it done it was always the same stylist who cut my hair so, I guess, in a way.

I've never been to a place where someone other than the stylist does the wash.

I go to the same guy and his assistant washes, dries and straightens my hair. I always tip her 15%

I leave a tip in the little envelopes they provide, and I make sure to write the thank you to both the person who cuts my hair and the person who washes it.
