We tip but a lot less than we normally would ... like 3-5% instead of 15-20%.

No option for sometimes! I'm not very consistent on this, I know you don't have to but sometimes I do for whatever reason!

We tip when they bring it to the car but when we walk in and get it I'd say it's rare for us to tip for that.

I usually add $2-3 to cover the credit card fees, especially at my favorite places.

only when we order takeout at IHOP. I find the tip makes the waitresses quicker at bagging all the food while it's hot and not skimping on the butter and condiments.
Otherwise, we don't tip at our go-to takeout places. We go there so much that our "tip" is constant patronage.

I waited tables in high school and some of college, so it's just ingrained in me now to tip. Unless the service at the to-go was horrible I always tip, even if it's just $2.

Yes, $1-2 except the time at Applebee's when the "Carside Specialist" brought us the wrong car's food TWICE.
pomegranate / 3779 posts
Yes, because often those employees aren't making minimum wage either.

No, the only thing I really ever order to-go is pizza or fast food. I'd probably tip a dollar or two if they brought it to my car.

@sleepybear: yeah I never do at a take out place like a pizza place. Only at restaurants like if I order fajitas from a Mexican place.

@Jackiedavis87: same here! I feel like I need to pay it forward now that I have moved on from serving. It's funny how excited cashiers get over a couple bucks (I know I used to at least, lol).

Always. Servers have to tip out a certain amount and claim a certain amount when they clock out, and take out is part of their sales numbers. I don't tip my usual amount, but always something.

@MoonMoon: me too! I try to because I used to work at a restaurant that was very casual and counter like, so I didnt always get tipped. Sure liked tips though!

Sometimes! If I'm picking up a pizza, no. I do tip at our regular takeout spots. Especially if they're busy.

DH does, he did $4 on a $19 order last time, BUT it was from the restaurant he works at...he does still tip other places but I think just $1....

i tip about 10% for takeout. the workers don't make that much money to begin with, i figure it doesn't hurt. but i understand not tipping, also (i used to not tip on takeout).
pomelo / 5720 posts
Almost always and it drives DH crazy. I was a waitress well into my 20's as a second job and I know they don't make much per hour so I try to always give at least $2-3.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
I try to leave a $1 if they really have to back up a lot of stuff but to me, this really isn't any different than picking up an order in a drive through window.

Never.
But I also live in Canada where the servers make at least minimum wage - I think it's ridiculous we're expected to tip in general, but I do it.
pomegranate / 3716 posts
I only recently started to tip for take out orders. Never occurred to me previously, but now I add $1 - 2.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Nope! I am doing the driving and the heavy lifting so I'm not tipping.
pomegranate / 3604 posts
@Shizaz: not always. If they serve liquor they only make 9.80/hr. general is 11.25.
pomegranate / 3375 posts
Always. I usually tip 10-15% for to-go. As a former hostess who had to prep to-go orders, I can tell you that they work hard to prep/organize orders. They take your order, input it into the system, get everything together (usually scanning for any mistakes by the kitchen), package it, and ring you up. That's worth a tip, imo.

@sera_87: Some provinces have laws like that, but in my province they all make minimum wage at least.
honeydew / 7622 posts
Yes. Sometimes $1-2 sometimes 10% as long as they have a tip line since I rarely carry cash.
